PART TWELVE OF EPISODE TWELVE OF SEASON TWO MAGNUS IS FREE “you are not your own” continued
160. Magnus: bitch let me show you how it’s done
Tumblr media
161. I love this Alec call back
Tumblr media Tumblr media
162. Alec: you’re the last person I would trust and you’d think I trust jace less but no I trust you less
Tumblr media Tumblr media
163. had to use the same one so they match
Tumblr media Tumblr media
164. that’s how I would get rid of jace
I love Alan’s posture because that is so Magnus lmao
“Magnus”: did I get rid of him? I could do it again just to make sure
Tumblr media
165. MAGNUS IS COMING BACK
Tumblr media
166. “you try to stall, with a flick of my finger jace dies” STALL MAGS
167. these words sound a little too true for Sebastian
Tumblr media
168. Alexander season 2 count: 17 (Magnus says it about 8 times in this episode)
Tumblr media
169. oh isn’t that a bitch?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
170. Valentine: she doesn’t understand anything
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
171. Magnus must have a migraine. look at Alec cleaning up. I mean it’s the least he could do
Tumblr media
172. I do wish this scene were longer and I know some others might be upset that Alec didn’t touch Magnus to comfort him but I think Alec sensed that Magnus didn’t want to be touched. Magnus just spent time in a serial killer mass murderer violent sociopath body. he had to live all his trauma all over again and worse of all, Alec didn’t trust him and believe in him right away
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
173. Alec: I fucked up (YES YOU DID ALEC AND I HATE BEING MAD AT ALEC IM MORE MAD AT THE WRITERS BUT BOY WHAT WERE YOU THINKING)
Tumblr media
174. I’m trying to balance this out but Alec’s whole mindset has to be in chaos at the moment
Tumblr media
175. Alec let Magnus down. he knew something wasn’t right and he could have tried to save Magnus quicker. knowing that he helped almost kill his boyfriend is going to be hanging over his head. what makes me mad is that they spent a few episodes on Alec killing Jocelyn but not this. I’m not sorry but this takes more of a precedence than Alec not having control of his thoughts and actions. Alec wasn’t under any spell. he was himself but his mind still in a way made him question stuff. and the fucking problem is, he trusted jace when he should have trusted Magnus. and we don’t really get to see Alec wrestle with that. but of course, they would rather make clary’s thing a priority than the more fucked up thing they had Alec do
176. Magnus saw a whole side of Alec- and he has every right to be upset. could he be resentful, angry, heartbroken with Alec? Alec didn’t believe him. what does that say about their relationship? they love one another but Alec didn’t trust in Magnus enough. like if the writers wanted to damage Malec, they could have done it in a better way. why mess with success? Malec has had a few breakups and it always tends up to be Alec’s fault in a way. STOP CAUSING ALEC MAGNUS MALEC PAIN. there were so many avenues they could’ve took with this storyline but they chose the Alec only listens to jace instead of his boyfriend and almost kills his boyfriend but doesn’t get to process any of it and his boyfriend barely gets to process any of it either
it does make me mad because Malec deserve better than this. IF YOU ARE GOING TO GIVE MAGNUS TRAUMA AT LEAST DO IT RIGHT
I said before: alec should have known from the beginning and planned to save Magnus but everyone would be against him. that would’ve been so much better. because at the end of season two, here they have more issues. and I just wanted to see them actually talk more about it and actually show these two process stuff
so I have to finish up another part so it may end up being two parts because I forgot to add so many gifs so that’s on me but I’ll finish more tonight

Story:
“Ayah! We need more frosting!” Rafael called out l from behind Magnus.
Magnus set to finish searching for the plastic knives he was sure he had. Alec hated it when he would just summon everything, especially now that Max was starting to come into his powers, even if, currently, there were only small sparks. His husband had been firm in his belief that Magnus should set a good example and not use magic for simple tasks. After some teasing about loving a scowling Inquisitor, Magnus had relented and seen Alec’s points,  drawing a  line when it came to groceries, though. They compromised that he would make a shopping list every two weeks and summon the groceries to the loft, of course, always leaving money behind for the items.
“Ayah,” Max whined.
“Rafe, there should be another piping bag full of frosting next to you. Could you help your brother?” Magnus guided them as he kept his previous search. He was glad he had at least convinced Alec to let him summon an extra bag of royal icing to ensure they had enough to build the gingerbread house. Magnus knew their boys might spill some in the decorating process, so he wanted to be prepared.
“We used it, Ayah,” the five-year-old informed him, “I still need more to put the gummies on Max’s horns.”
Magnus blinked a few times, processing what Rafe had just said, and then turned to the boys, only to feel a grimace form on his face when he saw how much of the icing hadn’t made it on the gingerbread pieces and instead on the boys, mostly Max.
“Alexander,” Magnus called calmly, “love, you were supposed to be watching the boys.”
“I was!” Alec defended himself as he walked back into the kitchen with some of the baby wipes they still kept around since Max’s diaper days. The couple had found that the wipes were excellent for cleaning up children after meals. He stopped in his tracks when he caught sight of why his husband was upset. “Boys…”
“Look, Daddy! I’m a gingerbread house!” Max, their three-year-old, shouted up at them as he pointed out all the icing and small candies decorating him.
“I helped get the crown around his head!” Rafe proclaimed proudly.
True to Rafe’s word, the young warlock had a small crown made from the pearl-like candy that came with the gingerbread house kit.
“You were supposed to decorate the house,” Alec corrected. He realized he would have to go back to retrieve the whole pack of wipes instead. There was no way the three he brought with him would ever be enough. Alec thought of maybe trying to convince his husband to clean the boys with magic instead. The archer wasn’t looking forward to options of wiping down Max and Rafe or giving them both a bath. Both of them sounded draining to him. However, he felt guilty asking anything of Magnus on his birthday. They were supposed to be spending today decorating the gingerbread house with their sons and then see the city’s Christmas Tree Lighting Event downtown.
“Sayang, do you mind if I cleaned them with magic?” Magnus asked, already calling his cerulean magic forward. “It will take longer to bathe them.”
Magnus looked towards the wall-mounted clock at his last statement. They still had two hours before they needed to leave, but if they wanted to finish the gingerbread house, a bath for their sons was not in the cards.
“I want to be cleaned by Ayah’s magic!” Rafe volunteered excitedly,  always enjoying the warmth his Ayah’s magic brought. Rafe had noticed how calming his Ayah’s magic could be after multiple, avoided nightmares and panic attacks.
“Why can’t I keep my decorations!?” Max cried out. He stomped his foot down on the stool and crossed his arms, pouting at his parents. He and Rafe had worked hard on making him into a gingerbread house, and Max didn’t understand why Daddy and Ayah couldn’t see how a waste it would be to wash it off.
“Remember we are going out to watch the tree lights tonight, Blue,” Alec reasoned. He was always the first to bat when it came to convincing the youngest of the Lightwood-Banes to do anything. “We promised Tia Izzy and Tio Jace pictures of the best lights, remember?”
“I know, Daddy,” Max stated, still pouting. He had enlisted Rafe’s help to make him a costume for the pics like he had worn on Halloween. He didn’t know why his parents didn’t understand; they had outfits on, too! Ayah had made Daddy wear a matching Christmas sweater. “That’s why I wanted to put on a costume.”
“A costume, Max?” Magnus questioned as he looked at his gingerbread house son.
“Maxie wanted to wear something Christmas like, as you and Daddy are,” Rafe explained for his younger brother.
Alec and Magnus both looked down at the Christmas sweaters that Maryse had given them. Magnus’ was red and white with a simple snowman and some snowflake pattern. Alec’s had the same design except in green and white instead. Maryse, of course, had provided two smaller sweaters for the boys, which were much more intricate. The parents just hadn’t let the boys put them on yet; in fear, they would stain them. They had kept them hung up in their room so their sons wouldn’t see them and attempt to pout their way into them right away.
“Maxie, Daddy and I put yours and Rafe’s sweaters away so they wouldn’t get dirty while we made the gingerbread house,” Magnus explained as he looked at Alec, still holding his magic at bay. He knew his husband would agree to the magic clean-up. He could see it in the way Alec looked between Max and the small amount of wipes he had brought with him. Still, Magnus respected his husband’s wishes when it came to how they would raise their children.
“Once Ayah cleans you both up with his magic, and we finish this gingerbread house, we can get you both in the sweaters Grandma sent for you,” Alec spoke to support his husband, hoping his husband caught his approval. He would forever be grateful that one of them had magic to keep up with their children. If they had to do everything the mundane way when it came to the boys, they would have to contract their own laundry services 24/7. Max always found a way to appear with a new stain any time they lost sight of him for a second, and Rafe, like the good older brother, would follow along.
“Grandma got us sweaters?” Max asked excitedly.
“Yes, Blue,” Magnus responded, allowing his magic to sweep through Rafe. He watched as the dried frosting and multiple candy pieces disappeared. He smiled at the way Rafe would look at the swirls and sparks, trying to catch some in between his palms. “All done, Rafe.”
“Thank you, Ayah!” Rafe shouted happily.
“Blue, are you going to let Ayah clean you up so we can finish?” Alec prompted as he kneeled close to Max, still at a distance so that he wouldn’t get dirty himself. “The sooner we finish the gingerbread house, the faster you can see the sweaters Grandma got you both.”
“Why can’t I put it on after Ayah cleans me, Daddy?” Max attempted with a pout. “I promise I will be extra careful not to get dirty.”
“Maxie, we can finish the house super fast!” Rafe stepped forward. He knew that try as he might, his little brother wasn’t capable of staying clean.
“Really?” Max turned to his brother. If Rafe helped him, Max knew he could get to the sweater faster.
Magnus watched the exchange between the boys with a smile. Rafe had started to learn how to get his brother to listen to him, and Magnus didn’t know if he should be concerned. So far, the little Shadowhunter had only used his newfound skill to help them get Max to listen to them.
Magnus had been glad he had paid attention, because as soon as Rafe had nodded in response, Max took off towards Magnus, asking to be cleaned right away. Magnus’ quick skills saved him from a ruined outfit as he enveloped his youngest in his magic, cleaning him, exactly before he collided with his legs.
“Thank you, Ayah!!” Max hugged Magnus and smiled up at him in between the giggles.
“You are quite welcome, my little blueberry,” Magnus ruffled his hair softly and looked up at his husband with a shrug and a smile. Magnus had never been happy to have been involved in combat. Still, he had to admit the reflexes and quick magic abilities he gained from it had become useful in dealing with their rambunctious children.
Alec instead went to wipe down the counter and cabinets. He looked at the time and saw the ninety minutes left till they needed to walk out the door.
“Babe, would you mind summoning us another one of these?” Alec held up the mostly empty bags of icing so Magnus would understand. “Maybe some of the candies as well.”
Magnus looked down at the boys at that comment. There had not been enough candy on Max to justify all the missing ones, meaning the boys had a snack while working on their masterpiece.
“Boys?” Magnus prompted, and he could see how they had started to look away from Alec and him. “Did you get hungry?”
“Maybe a little…,” Rafe admitted looking at everything in the room but his parents. It wasn’t like they could reuse the candy they had taken off Max after scrapping their first crown design. Max and he weren’t about to let good candy go to waste. “It was only the ones we took off of Max’s first crown, I swear.”
“I’ll let this one slide since I don’t think it was that many, but remember we were already going to get hot chocolate while out. Too many sweets will make your stomachs upset,” Magnus reasoned the best he could with them.
“We are still getting hot chocolate, right, Ayah?” Rafe asked, turning on the rare puppy eyes from him onto Magnus.
“I could convince Ayah otherwise if you both promise to behave while we build the gingerbread house,” Alec offered as soon as he saw the chocolate puppy eyes. He knew how weak his husband was to any of their downcast eyes; it wasn’t a fair match up.
“Promise! We will behave, Daddy! I will make sure Max does as well,” Rafael quickly turned to Alec, now joined by Max with his own pair of puppy eyes.
Magnus waved his hands, calling his magic again to summon new icing, handing it specifically to his husband away from the kids, and a fresh supply of candy. He was thankful that the kids hadn’t decided to construct the crown from pieces of gingerbread instead.
They quickly found a steady pace after Alec took the lead, letting boys point out where the frosting needed to be placed and allowing them to decorate the walls with the candy. Magnus helped keep the boys clean, with a wipe in hand just in case, and rolling up their sleeves every time they would fall back down their arms.
“Done! Sweaters now?!” Max cried out triumphantly as he placed the last of the hard gummies on the roof of their gingerbread house.
“Yes, why don’t you go wash your hands and face with Daddy while I go get yours and Rafe’s outfits ready,” Magnus chuckled as he wiped some frosting off of Alec’s face.
Alec was about to lean forward for a kiss as compensation for volunteering for clean-up duty when Rafael started to tug on his sweater sleeve.
“Daddy! Come on. You can be mushy later!” Rafe reprimanded as he kept tugging Alec towards the door.
Alec smiled at Magnus and shook his head. He turned around, taking both of his sons’ hands into his own, and instantly regretted it when he felt how much icing they still managed to touch even though he was the one holding the icing’s bag.
“Come on then, ” Alec led them out the door and to the restroom.
Magnus could hear them as they made their way to the restroom, cheering and giggling the whole way. He did a quick wipe down of the counter, mundane-style, before he set off to get the boys’ outfits.
Once he was in the master bedroom he and Alec shared Magnus, saw the pair of gingerbread-man-like sweaters hanging on the closet door. Maryse had seen them at a shop and couldn’t resist buying a matching set of sweaters for her grandbabies. Magnus had to admit that with the brown snow pants he planned to pair the sweaters with, the boys would look the part of gingerbread men. The brown sweaters had simple white, green, and red patterns to mimic the frosting and candy buttons a gingerbread man usually had.
“Ayah!! We are done! We are done!”
“Can we have our sweaters now!?”
The cries of both his boys set him in motion. Magnus sneakingly waved his hands before anyone entered the room, bringing the two pairs of pants he needed from the boys’ rooms. When he turned around, he found out he hadn’t been as sneaky as he had hoped. Alec was looking at him with an eyebrow raised, looking at the pants now on the bed. Magnus offered his husband the best innocent smile he could conjure up before Alec broke and smiled at him shaking his head.
“Max, Ayah is going to help you so he can also assist you in applying your glamour, alright?” Alec hated having to request Max to wear his glamour, but mundanes wouldn’t understand their son’s blue pigment. Alec knew Max didn’t fully understand now, and the young boy just thought it was a fun game or another costume whenever he did have to use glamour.
“Daddy, I can dress myself!” Rafe proudly stated as he walked to his Ayah to collect his clothes.
As of lately, Rafael had started to take his role more seriously as the older one and, in the process, had begun to claim that he no longer needed his parents’ help doing things like getting water, a snack, or putting on clothes. Magnus had drawn the line on picking his clothes out when Rafe had tried to walk out of the loft with five different jackets on, proclaiming his Tia Izzy had told him it was called layering.
After the boys were dressed and true to his word Rafe got prepared all by himself; Magnus started working on Max’s glamour. They had settled long ago on matching the glamour’s skin tone to Rafael’s, his hair color would match Alec’s, and on Max’s request, even though blue eyes were common enough to leave them be, Max’s eyes were shifted to the same chocolate brown Magnus used as his.
“Done, Ayah?” Max asked as he felt the magic starting to fade.
“All set, Maxie,” Magnus confirmed, before turning to Rafe. “Good job, Rafe. Soon you will be trying to make your breakfast and then want to train only with your Daddy and Tio Jace,” Magnus pulled Rafe close as the other started to chuckle at his dramatics.
“Ayaaahh,” Rafe whined between giggles as he tried to get away.
Alec watched Max move forward and try to help his brother get away from Magnus. He smiled and wondered if this could be another one; he discreetly asked Catarina to pull out from his memories as a photo so that he could frame it. He rarely did because all of his family memories were precious, but on rare occasions, he would ask. He  had only done it five other times before.
“Are you ready, Sayang?”
“Yes, we need to be there soon, so we can stop for hot chocolate first,” Alec smiled and reached for Rafe’s hand as Magnus started to open the portal.
He set it to open up in an alley behind a Downworlder run cafe, where they would get their hot cocoa. They usually would appear inside the cafe with no problem, but Jack had warned them not to do it during the Holidays because he would also serve mundanes during that season.
After he stabilized the portal, Magnus reached for Max’s hand.
”Now remember boys, we do not let go of Daddy’s or my hand when we are crossing through,” Magnus instructed. He knew it was becoming redundant with how many times they used portals to travel.
“Yes, Ayah.” They both responded in unison.
Alec led Rafael with him and crossed through, closely followed behind by Magnus and Max. Then he quickly turned to check on the youngest boy, who was a bit iffy when it came to portal travel. Sometimes Max’s stomach wouldn’t exactly agree with the magic used to travel. To his relief, Max seemed fine as he kept tugging at Magnus’s hand when he realized where exactly they had landed.
“Calm down, Max,” Alec gently warned. The boy looked up at Alec and once again presented his puppy eyes. Even when glamoured, they never failed to cause a clench in Alec’s heart.
“We are almost there, Maxie,” Rafe chimed in with a smile as he pointed to the opening of the alley.
Luckily for them, the snow was still not sticking and instead was melting as the flurries fell. Max finally calmed down after Rafe held his hand, and as they walked out onto the sidewalk. If anyone saw them, they would just assume they were a typical mundane family; it was only those who belonged to the Shadow World who knew who exactly they were.
Alec opened the small cafe’s doors for his family, relishing the bits of warmth he felt just from entering.
“Look, Ayah!” Rafe pointed to the newly added display case full of pastries, “Can we have one, please? Please? Please?”
“Can we, Daddy?” Max added, directing his pleas at Alec, in case Rafe’s failed.
“Boys, we have a whole gingerbread house at home,” Magnus reasoned. He knew they couldn’t exactly eat the thing since they had already tried last year, and the gingerbread pieces weren’t exactly edible. Still, they were already getting hot chocolate, and he wasn’t looking forward to giving them more sugar.
“But Ayah, last year you said we couldn’t eat, but it was nice to make!” Rafael accused.
Alec internally sighed as he watched his husband try and defuse the situation. He let his eyes scan over to the display case and caught sight of a box of miniature Christmas decorated cakes; there were two different designs, a snowman and an ornament one, and there were two of each design. The round cakes were smaller in diameter than all of Magnus’ coasters at home. Alec cleared his throat in the agreed way to signal Magnus he needed his attention, but discreet enough not to let their sons notice.
Magnus looked up, followed his eyes to where Alec was signaling and noticed the boxes of 4 miniature cakes in the display case.
“You are right; it almost slipped my mind,” Magnus feigned as he ruffled Rafael’s hair. He pretended to look at the display case before pointing to the box of cakes. “Oh, look, boys! We could each get our own small cake with our hot chocolate.”
“Yes!” Max cheered, not seeing what his Ayah was pointing out, rejoicing instead that they were getting more sweets.
“Look, Ayah! This one has a reindeer on it!” Rafe pointed out to another box next to the one Alec had seen.
“Oh, it also has a snowflake one, and it’s blue!!” Max cheered at the other design in the same box as the reindeer.
“Well, if it isn’t my favorite family,” Jack greeted them from behind the counter.
“Hello,” both Max and Rafe greeted back as their parents taught them.
“What can I get you today?”
“Four of the House Hot Chocolates and boys, have you decided on which box you want?” Magnus asked as he looked down to see his sons still looking at the cakes.
After some silent debating, Rafe stepped forward.
“We want the snowflake and ornament box, please,” Rafe stated clearly and politely, earning him a shoulder pat from Alec and a smile from Magnus.
“The box of small cakes with snowflake and ornament designs as well, please, Jack.” Magnus finished the order.
“No problem. Should have your order out in five minutes,” Jack confirmed, causing the children to cheer, throwing their hands up.
Alec guided Rafe, while Magnus grabbed Max’s hand again, so they could all stand to the side, letting other customers order while they waited.
“After this, we are going to the park, right?” Rafe asked, looking up at his Daddy.
“Correct. We are going to go sit on a bench and watch as they light the park’s tree and the other decorations they have,” Alec explained.
“Are we going to eat our cakes over there, Daddy?” Max asked.
“Yes, you can hold and sip at your hot cocoa but Ayah will hold the cakes till we are at the park’s bench,” Alec smiled at the slight frown he received from his youngest. Alec knew patience was not Max’s strong suit.
“Lightwood-Bane!” Jack called out from the cash register. He had all four drinks in to-go cups, two in child cups, with a removable paper grip on them that included sturdy-paper handles on both sides of them. It was so that parents could pull out both sides to simulate a sippy cup,  or only one side to have a mug, depending on how their child would hold it better.
“Thanks, Jack. Hope you have a good day,” Alec replied as he moved forward and paid for their drinks and tip.
“Come again soon,” Jack smiled.
Magnus took one of the child cups and started to undo one of the handles, and set it in place so that Max could hold it. Max was  now able to hold cups properly without any issue, but Magnus still didn’t want to take any chances,  in case his grip on it lessened with only one hold; that was why he took the other handle out as well.
“Here you go, Blue,” Magnus offered the cup to Max.
“Can I do the handles on my cup?” Rafe asked before Alec had a chance to pull the tabs free.
“Sure, buddy,” Alec smiled and handed it over to Rafael, observing him just in case he needed assistance. Rafael struggled a bit to get the tabs loose first, but once he did, the handle popped into place with a bit of coaxing.
“Look, Ayah, I did it! Look, Maxie!” Rafe proudly showed off his cup with one of the handles pulled out.
“Good job, Rafe!” Magnus praised him.  Rafael was growing up so fast , Magnus realized.
“Next time I want to try like Rafe, Daddy!” Max announced as he looked proudly at his older brother, wanting to do things like Rafe could.
“Maybe, Maxie,” Alec offered and grabbed his and Magnus’ cups, while Magnus took the small bag, holding their cakes for later.
They both took the boys’ hands as they started to get ready to leave. Rafe reached for Ayah’s hand, proclaiming it was his turn to hold it since Max had it on the way there. Max pouted for a second before Alec picked the young warlock up and carried him with one hand, putting the two hot chocolates in a drink carrier they had provided him. This way, he could hold Max in one hand and the drinks in another.
Magnus smiled at his husband and shook his head at how easy Alec gave in to Max at times.
“All set?” Magnus asked with a tight grip on the bag and Rafael’s hand. He got  a chorus of affirmative answers from his family before they all exited the small cafe.
Alec was glad he decided to carry Max when he noticed how excited the boy was getting as the park came into vision at the end of the sidewalk.
“Daddy, can we play on the swings?” Max questioned right away.
“Not today, Maxie,” Alec replied as he shook his head, “remember we are here to see the Christmas lights.”
“Oh, right, the lights!” Max recalled and started to grow even more excited. “Also, we need pictures.”
Magnus smiled down to Rafe, as the young Shadowhunter smiled back up at him at his brother’s antics.
They came to the end of the sidewalk and entered  the gates of the park’s entrance. They were met with a few people in festive gear passing out flyers and candy canes.
“Hello, are you here for the light festival?” a young girl greeted them. “Oh my gosh!!! You have the cutest gingerbread men as sons!”
“Thank you,” Max and Rafe replied in unison as they preened at the compliment.
“Awww, they answer together as well, and have manners! They are honestly so adorable.”
“Yes, we are. Our boys and my husband wanted to get some holiday photos and enjoy the show,” Alec replied with a proud smile.
“Thank you for your compliments,” Magnus accepted warmly.
“Welcome then. The show should start in twenty minutes. Since you have little ones, you get access to the front spots, don’t worry, there’s still benches there. Just for this year, the city borrowed some of Santa’s reindeer to help with the lights, and we are dividing the front spots for people with younger kids so they can get a closer view of them,” she explained, winking to the boys as she said the Santa’s part.
“Santa?” Rafe asked as his eyes got bigger. “He let you borrow them? Won’t he need them?”
“Yeah! Won’t Santa need them? How come you took them?” Max parroted but was still excited that they would get to see the reindeer.
“Not to worry. We only borrowed the reindeer for today; after that, the reindeer will fly back to the North Pole so they can help Santa for Christmas,” she explained so expertly that it was apparent, she had handled these types of questions before.
“Oh! That’s nice of him!” Max concluded with an excited smile, and Rafael nodded along with his brother.
“With that settled here you are,” she slipped the flyer with a picture of children playing in the snow in between Alec’s drink carrier. “This is just so that they know you are supposed to be there since you have kids. I doubt they will get far from you, but in case one of you needs to attend to them both and leave the other solo on the bench. It’s just for your convenience, so we won’t accidentally ask you to move because  you don’t seem to have children.”
“Thank you,” Alec responded with a smile. He was grateful she had put it in between the drinks instead of trying to hand it to him. It would’ve ended in an awkward dance, where he would’ve had to put Max down eventually.
“Most of the benches at the beginning are taken, I believe, but there are still some free ones  at the middle and the end, ” she outlined as the family started to make their way through the entrance.
Magnus smiled and nodded in response, turning back to follow Alec’s lead.
“I think an end bench would be best. It gives us time to set up the kids with their cakes and the phone cameras for the photos,” Alec offered as he started to observe the layout of the park. He looked around at the other families enjoying their time and at the kids running around impatiently, waiting for the show to start.
“Agreed. Come on, Rafe.” Magnus guided them towards the end and looked around till he spotted a few open benches next to them. “There should be perfect.”
Max and Rafael grew more excited as they stepped  closer to the bench. Once there, they knew they would be allowed to walk around it,  but more importantly, they would finally get their small cakes. Max was set down first, followed by Rafe, before they sat beside them on both sides. Alec handed Magnus his cup while taking the cakes from him.
“Daddy, can I have my cake?” Max immediately requested as he set the cup of cocoa down between his legs.
“Me too!” Rafe chimed in.
“Yes, of course, don’t worry, I just need to get us all settled, and Ayah needed his cocoa as well,” Alec explained as he started to open the box of cakes. The cakes were all individually wrapped in paper, and there was a good amount of napkins on the side of the box. “Which ones did you boys want?”
“Snowflake!” answered Max.
“Ornament!” Rafe exclaimed.
Alec smiled and nodded as he picked up an ornament and a snowflake designed cake and handed them over to the boys carefully. He noticed how the small cake easily fit in Max’s hands.
“Hold on, boys, let me get a picture for the family,” Magnus had his phone out, already lining up the shot of the kids  holding their cakes in their sweaters. “Smile.”
Max and Rafe held up their cakes and smiled big for the camera. They had grown up around their Ayah and Tia Izzy, always wanting photos of them, so by now, they knew where to look when someone asked them to take a picture.
“Perfect!” Magnus praised as he quickly snapped a few more for safe measure. “Go ahead and eat now; thank you for waiting, boys.”
“Which one would you like, babe?” Alec asked, holding up the open box for Magnus to choose. The boys were happily eating away their small treats, with warm sips from their cocoa to wash it all down.
“Hmm,” Magnus pretended to be in deep thought as he assessed both of the cakes, “I think I will take the ornament. They used edible glitter on it, and I can’t resist that.”
Alec released a light chuckle at his husband’s reasoning but accepted it either way. He carefully handed the cake over to Magnus and leaned over the boys for a chaste kiss, watchful not to disturb them.
They all settled down on the bench and peacefully ate while they waited for the show to start. From what Alec and Magnus had looked up online that morning, the show would consist of the big tree in the middle coming to light, as a small parade of volunteers came out and performed some Holiday songs.
Alec recalled the morning’s conversation with his husband, smiling.
“Good morning, babe,” Alec kissed up Magnus’ bare shoulder as the light broke through the curtains. “Happy birthday, my love.”
Magnus incoherently mumbled as he started to wake up. He had hoped he would get to sleep in more on his birthday, at least.
“Alexander,” he managed as he pushed back further into his husband’s warm body. “How early is it?”
“It’s already 10 am, love,” Alec informed him as he kept kissing Magnus’ shoulder. “I got the boys breakfast and let you sleep in a bit longer.”
“I knew I married you for a reason,” Magnus praised, smiling into his pillow. “Did you make me breakfast?”
“Of course, I did. I even brought it for you,” Alec stated with an eye roll his husband couldn’t see but could probably hear. “Max and Rafe are currently watching cartoons, so I say we have 25 minutes of safety.”
“Breakfast in bed?” Magnus turned around and sat up while attempting to rub the sleep away from his eyes.
Alec leaned over and claimed Magnus’ lips in a soft morning kiss before placing a tray with french toast and sliced fruit in front of him.
“Oh! I am getting spoiled, I see! French Toast is only for special occasions,” Magnus teased as he picked up his silverware and started to cut his breakfast. He held up a bit for Alec to take. “What did I do to have such a good husband?”
“Nothing, you deserved me just by being you, sometimes I think you deserve more,” Alec admitted, as he took the bite offered, “I wanted to make sure you knew how special you are to me. The boys have presents waiting for you as well, but I wanted some time with you before then.”
“Then it’s a good thing I get to decide what I want as well because I wouldn’t choose anyone but you,” Magnus corrected as he took a bite for himself. He enjoyed the attention he was getting from Alec. It was still something he was growing to become accustomed to; even after all these years, an ever decreasing part of himself still held to the scars of his past. Alec was healing them, though, applying a healthy dose of his love over each one,  every chance the Shadowhunter got.
“What do you want to do after presents?  I have Jace and Izzy covering for me all day, with strict orders to only call on life or death things,” Alec informed him. “We could go out shopping with the boys if that’s what you want? Anything you want to do today goes.”
Magnus got through his bite and thought of what his husband had offered.
“Are you offering a shopping trick with me, Sayang?”
“If that is what you want to do today, then yes.”
“Anything I want?”
“Name it, and it is yours.”
“I want to do some holiday stuff as a family,” Magnus stated clearly. They had been watching some holiday movies last night, and it got him thinking of how they hadn’t done their annual gingerbread house yet or even purchased a tree. The boys had already written their Wish List, and Magnus had changed the house decorations a bit to be more festive, but past that, they had done nothing.
“Holiday stuff? Like, watch movies?” Alec asked.
“We could, but I was thinking more along the lines of making the gingerbread house and using the sweaters that your mom got us all,” Magnus offered in between some bites of fruit.
“Simon and Clary were going on and on about some sort of mundane light event at the park that was supposed to take place today,” Alec offered. “We could take the boys out to that? Maybe pick them up some hot chocolate along  the way? They have been eating their fruits and vegetables, even Max, which is surprising, after he attempted to justify that since we call him blueberry, and blueberries are fruits, it would be wrong to eat them. I swear we shouldn’t let Jace and Simon babysit anymore.”
“I would agree, but I like date night too much to lose your brother and his boyfriend as babysitters,” Magnus reasoned with a smile. “That sounds good, though, we can tell them after presents.”
“Alexander?” Magnus asked, looking at his husband, who seemed to have spaced out a bit.
“Sorry, I just remembered something,” Alec apologized and offered a shy smile to cover up his blush hopefully. “Are you enjoying your birthday, Magnus?”
“I am. Thank you, Sayang,” Magnus easily answered. It was the truth, after all. After their conversation, everything had been like a dream for Magnus, even the frosting accident. He got to make new memories with the boys and spend a whole day with his husband. There was nothing more Magnus could wish for.

something in our minds will always stay
Malec, Pure Angst with a Hopeful Ending, Immortal Husbands (but not in a good way). 1.5k.
[referenced apocalypse, blood and injuries, offscreen character deaths, grief]
I don't know where this comes from. My brain decided today was angst fest day and I've been watching the Umbrella Academy and the Old Guard and thinking about immortal husbands...and this happened.
Title from Fragile, by Sting.
Read on AO3.
The blackened ruins and the red sky give Alec flashbacks to the too long time they once spent in Edom, in Asmodeus’ castle, but this is not a dimension of Hell. This is Earth, or what little is left of it. The destroyed house is missing its roof entirely, and Alec looks up at the sky before he limps his way in.
The dimming light of stars is barely visible through the approaching cloud of smoke. Alec soaks it up. It’s the first time he’s actually seen the stars in longer than he can remember, and he’s missed it.
The sight that greets him inside the house coaxes out his first real emotion in even longer. The figure is barely recognizable on the floor, covered in soot and blood, hands and feet manacled and chained to the floor. Alec doesn’t bother checking that they’re alone – there’s no need for that.
Magnus gives a low moan as he opens his eyes, golden irises glowing in the near dark. Alec chokes on his breath, swallowing back a sob. Finally.
He falls to his knees in front of Magnus, reaching out for him desperately. “I’m sorry it took me so long to find you,” he whispers.
“A hundred years, Alexander,” Magnus gives him a bloody smile. “It’s a long time to wait.”
“And now it’s too late,” Alec sobs.
“You’re here,” Magnus murmurs. “It’s not too late.”
Alec gathers him in his arms, mindful of the way Magnus winces in pain at every move. He himself isn’t in a much better state, though he can still walk. “It’s coming, Magnus. The end.”
“How many apocalypses have we survived, Alexander?” Magnus looks up at him. There’s no fear in his face. Neither of them have any energy left for fear.
“Five?” Alec tries. He’s not even sure, honestly. What counts as an apocalypse, when you’ve made it to the other end? He can only count the losses, the failures, the defeats. The mistakes that got them here. “The first was...Valentine’s wish, wasn’t it? You survived. The rest of the Downworld didn’t.”
“It felt like the worse grief I could ever overcome, at the time,” Magnus smiles sadly. “Almost destroyed me.”
“If only we’d known, what was to come–”
“Would we have made it?”
Alec swipes a dirty strand of hair away from Magnus’ face. He watches him hungrily, taking in his features under the grime. “Would it have been so bad, if we didn’t? I’m ready to die. I’ve been ready for so long.”
“You haven’t been happy since–” Magnus starts. He interrupts himself to cough, his chest heaving painfully.
“Neither have you,” Alec murmurs.
“Even I grew weary. There’s only so much loss one can take. At least when we had each other–”
Alec looks away. “What do you think will happen?” he asks. “When we die? Are we going to Hell?”
“I’ve never seen human souls, in any of the dimensions of Hell,” Magnus says. “I don’t think that’s where they go. And I doubt a demon-spawn like me is welcome in Heaven.” It’s a conversation well-rehearsed, that they’ve had hundreds of times. It doesn’t matter. Alec walks through the motions, as if it still brings them reassurance. They’ve faced death more times than they can count, and yet it turns out that immortality was a curse, not a gift.
Never a gift.
“Do you think the angels will take you to Heaven, Alexander?”
“The angels stopped looking over me the day I became immortal,” Alec answers. “It was never their wish for any of the Nephilim. Besides, I’ve long since stopped believing in Heaven as mortals imagine it.”
“Do you hope for nothingness? For the void? Is that what you yearn for?” Magnus’ voice has a far away quality to it, already fading. Alec holds him tighter, as if it could keep him from leaving him early.
“Wherever we go, I would stay with you, if at all possible,” he answers.
“You didn’t always say that,” Magnus murmurs.
Alec feels tears running down his face. The last hundred years of relentlessly searching the Earth for Magnus have nothing on the decades that followed the second apocalypse. The demon invasion. The death of his family, of their family, the loss of everything he had, and what it led him to do… Alec would take it all back, in a second. In his more selfish moments, he would take any apocalypse over the hurt in Magnus’ eyes as Alec came to resent him and walked away from him.
They’ve found each other again, and again, endless circles of losing their way and collapsing into each other when the weight became to heavy for one pair of shoulders.
“What would you change, if you could?” Magnus asks, grabbing his hand and squeezing tightly, despite the broken nails and the bloody gashes marring both of their skins.
Alec sobs. “Our family, our children… Magnus–”
“What if we could? What if we could go back?”
Alec’s eyes widen. Magnus’ gaze never wavers, bright under the burned, bruised skin of his face.
“We can’t change the past,” Alec shakes his head. “Whatever we do, it wouldn’t make it better.”
“For the world, maybe not,” Magnus shrugs. “But maybe it’s time to stop worrying about the world. Maybe we can finally get our own peace, even amid the chaos and destruction.”
“We’re already at the end,” Alec murmurs. “Maybe time really is immutable. Maybe there was nothing we could do. We fought for so long.”
Magnus leans on his elbow to hold himself up, closer to Alec’s face. “The world threw at us, at you, everything it had, Alexander. And you stood against it.”
Alec closes his eyes. “I faltered many times, Magnus. I am not that strong.”
“And yet you rose again, every time.”
The grounds starts shaking. The sulfur smell in the air is getting stronger. Alec looks up, and the stars are somehow clearer, sharper. Or maybe it’s all just in his mind. Maybe he’s starting to hallucinate, his body finally giving out.
Maybe none of this was ever real.
“I love you,” he murmurs, because that’s the one thing Alec never doubted.
“I love you too, Alexander,” Magnus whispers back.
Time is slipping out from under them. After a thousand years, they’re finally running out of time.
It feels smothering. It feels like a liberation.
It tastes like the end.
Magnus sits up painfully, coughing a mouthful of blood onto the dirt floor. “If you would unchain me, I think it’s time, Alexander.”
Without a word, Alec grasps at the heavy manacles around Magnus’ wrists. Strands of purple magic engulf his hands, pricking at the metal until it falls away.
“One last act of defiance,” Magnus says, raising his hands weakly. “Here at the end of all things.”
“Yes,” Alex whispers, cradling him once again. “Magnus, take me back to the start.”
Magnus closes his eyes, barely breathing. Alec gently wipes a tear from his cheek. The exhaustion is deep in his bones, fatigue born of carrying the weight of the world for longer than any human brain can fathom.
Magnus’ final act is nothing as spectacular as his dramatic displays of magic used to be. There is no energy to be wasted for such things, not now, not any more. The tendrils of blue light barely tickle at Alec’s skin, as he forces himself to keep his eyes open to witness the end. There is no pain.
When the shockwave comes, taking with it everything that is left of the world, it finds them unmoving, Alec’s eyes still turned to the stars through the destroyed roof, Magnus’ head cradled in his arms. It finds no life left to take, and it leaves as soon as it comes, taking with it the last remains of a too long fight, washing away the bitter taste of failure.
*
Magnus opens his eyes to the dancing lights of the Pandemonium. It’s like the end of a long dream, except that it feels far more real than this place, these walls he only barely remembers now, fellow Downworlders around him who haven’t walked the world in too long. He looks across the room, taking in the dancers and drinkers pressing against each other, hoping for a night of fun – a night to forget the heaviness of the world.
Magnus can never forget, but as he glimpses a mop of dark hair, the edge of a bow, the red fledgling of an arrow, it’s almost enough to soothe a thousand years of suffering. Almost.
Alexander’s eyes cross him briefly, and he nods, his gaze old and pained and yet hopeful. His siblings are here, unaware of what passes between Alec and Magnus, unaware yet of everything that is to befall them – but perhaps some of that can be averted, now. Perhaps they can find their peace.
Hopefully it won’t take them another thousand years.

Why So Complicated Chapter Five
Hello and welcome back to another segment of “Why so complicated.” Here is the masterlist if you want any of the previous segments of Alec and Magnus’ collective stupidity. This was going to be my last but like I’m enjoying this story too much so we are not going to make this the last segment. So far, we have seen Alec be an absolute dumb fuck and pushing away the love of his life because he’s scared to out himself even though he’s already outed himself. Will Alec finally have the balls to talk to Magnus or will he just stare into his golden eyes with feelings of self hatred and regret? Honestly, it is as much of a surprise to you guys as it is to me. Anyway, let’s find out together.
Warnings: cuteness, fluff, EMOTIONS, Malec still being one collective unit
Alec had spent all morning cleaning out his room. Not because he was some sort of a clean freak, no. It was quite the opposite in fact. Alec had trouble sleeping unless the floor of his room was covered in a massive pile of dirty black clothes. However, this new change was inspired by the fact that Magnus was going to be coming over today to discuss their final project. Normally, when Izzy invited her friends over, or even when his mother begged him to, Alec never cleaned his room. But despite what he showed everyone else, Alec would do anything to impress the golden eyed boy that he was slowly losing his heart to. For the first time in years, Alec had ditched the faded AC/DC t-shirt that he had practically lived in for the last four years. Instead he opted for a simple black button down shirt and was neatly tucked into his ankle length black jeans. Whenever Alec had seen Magnus, he had been immaculately dressed, so this was the least Alexander could do. The doorbell rang soon enough and Alec felt all the confidence leave his body.
“Alexander, my darling, you clean up nice.” Magnus’ voice in the doorway woke Alec up again. He looked different. His hair was still magnificent and his makeup was on point but still he looked different. “Alec, it was a compliment.”
“I know.” Alec mumbled and nodded quickly and quickly tried to dive into the piles of work waiting for them. He wasn’t even sure that Magnus heard him. Even as he was working he could feel Magnus’ gaze on him. That made it so much more difficult to focus. And not that often, but still often enough, Alec found himself staring at Magnus too.
“I can’t do this. Magnus, I can’t do this. I don’t understand this and it scares me. I can’t...I’ve never felt this way and I don’t even know what this is.” As Alec ranted on, he felt Magnus slowly reach out and hold his hand. That seemed to calm Alexander down a little bit.
“It’s very new for me too, Alexander. I don’t know what this is either. But I am willing to figure it out. With you.” Alec locked his eyes with Magnus’. His brain was screaming that what he was about to do next was a terrible idea, but his heart? Oh, his heart had been shouting at him to do this since the day he first laid eyes on Magnus. And so, for a change, he listened to his heart. He squeezed Magnus’ hand and leaned forward. Before he knew it, his chapped lips were brushing against Magnus’ soft ones. They kissed until they both felt the need for air.
“Okay. Okay, I will take the risk. I will figure it out with you. I like you, Magnus. But slowly.”
“Okay, Alexander. I can do ‘slowly’.” Alec knew this was going to be scary but the way Magnus was smiling at him right now made it worth it.
***
Magnus knew the Lightwoods were rich but he didn’t realise exactly how much until he set into Alec’s house. Sorry, mansion. A smile made its way to Magnus’ face as he looked around at the effort Alec had put into cleaning the house. There was no way the lanky kid wearing the same clothes since he was thirteen always kept the house so clean. He did this for Magnus and for that Magnus was thankful. Little did he know that this wasn’t even the best of it. Generally, there was not that made Magnus stop in his tracks. However, looking at Alexander in a simple black shirt that was neatly tucked away into his black jeans with a matching belt, something snapped inside Magnus.
“Alexander, my darling, you clean up nice. It’s a compliment.” When that statement went unnoticed Magnus thought that maybe he had been reading the signs wrong all this while. Maybe Alexander didn’t care about him like he had previously thought. He kept looking at Alec throughout the night, He loved the way the taller boy frowned when he was trying to concentrate. He also loved the way Alec tried sneak glances at Magnus every so often.
“I can’t do this. Magnus, I can’t do this. I don’t understand this and it scares me. I can’t...I’ve never felt this way and I don’t even know what this is.” That definitely caught Magnus off guard. He wasn’t sure how he wanted to respond so he just said whatever came to his mind.
“It’s very new for me too, Alexander. I don’t know what this is either. But I am willing to figure it out. With you.” The silence Alec presented Magnus with was the most nerve-wracking thing he had ever experienced. But what happened next was something Magnus couldn’t have prepared for in a million different realities. Alec met Magnus’ golden eyes with his own blue ones. Then, all of sudden, he leaned forward and kissed Magnus. It didn’t take Magnus too long to start responding to him. He only let go when he thought Alec needed some air.
“Okay. Okay, I will take the risk. I will figure it out with you. I like you, Magnus. But slowly.”
“Okay, Alexander. I can do ‘slowly’.” Magnus knew this was going to be scary but the way Alexander was smiling at him right now made it worth it.

Hmm listening to an audiobook and it kinda gave me malec vibes: Character A is older and richer than B and thinks that B only puts up with him because he's a poor and wouldn't come looking for him when he's in trouble, but he's fine with that because he loves B and will take anything. B meanwhile thinks there's no way A would want someone like him for anything solid/real so never talked about his feelings and thinks he ruined everything by being so desperate to help A. Yeah they fight, and cry.
god the fucking!!!!!!!! "the person i like doesnt like me the same way i do but thats fine I'll take what i can get i already know it doesn't get much better than this anyway" trope!!! is so!!!! Magnus!!!!! like fuck!!!!!!!! it hurts!!!! thinking about how he was willing to be alec's dirty little secret!!!!!!!!! thinking about how he really thought Alec would think less of him because of his father and his past!!!!! thinking about how he was used to everyone only talking to him to demand things!!!!! thinking about how he was shocked and filled with wonder that Alec would get him gifts and just want to be with him and take care of him!!! fuck!!!!! aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
I'm a little confused with the plot here (possibly because I'm a dumb illiterate bitch) but i just udbdidndjdnd i love this trope of Magnus being totally convinced that Alec wouldnt love him like he does, and that is fine, it is, because he knows that he loves too greatly, too monstruously, like a plague, but he can't stop, so he should be grateful that his parasite of a love isnt enough to drive Alec away, and take his crumbs - its fine, he's done it before, so many times
and Alec thinks that the reason Magnus is closed off and basically rejecting any attempt at showing him love before it can even form - because he's scared he's reading too much into it, because he doesn't want the conversation to even steer close to stuff like this so he doesn't hurt himself, because that semblance of comfort he can keep - means that Magnus doesnt like him like he does. and he's also fine with that, because hes loyal, and when he loves he loves fiercely, and Magnus makes him too happy for him to give that up just because Magnus doesn't like him the same way
and it's just aaaa pain and angst until eventually of course one of them runs their big mouth, because theyre both terrible at lying and even worse at hiding, especially from each other, and it's just ridiculous because the whole time they've been assuming and hurting when they love each other so deeply and. aaaaaaaaaa

I just got into shadowhunters two weeks ago and it has consumed my life and i didn't expect to see you post about it, nor did i expect people to ship raphaelxmelliorn, but now im intrigued and would love to hear your thoughts on it if you want to share
OMG ABSOLUTELY ok so disclaimer i stopped watching after 3x04 because they were already doing my man raphael really dirty in season 3 and with the incredible stigmatization and vilification that was happening with jace i was just not interested in continuing, but i probably will go back and watch the rest of season 3 for the malec content at some point.
i would say that not a lot of people ship raphael x meliorn, or at least not a lot of people create(d) content for it, but i for one am obsessed with them lol. i think they’ve both had very similar situations navigating dealing with people in positions of power who’ve mistreated them (Camille, the Seelie Queen) and that their respective relationships with isabelle have been similarly toxic and potentially traumatic, and there’s a lot of foundation there for bonding even though they don’t interact directly very much in the show.
plus they’re both two of my favorite characters not just in the show but of all time, & i think their personalities and worldviews would be compatible though not identical, and the scenes where they do interact onscreen (“all Shadowhunters look the same to me”) are iconic!!
i have a largely inactive sideblog @downworldersdeservebetter and there’s a raphael x meliorn tumblr @raphaeliorndaily run by @xofemeraldstars if you want to check those out, and i’ll add my raphael x meliorn tag to this post which has my original content for them that i’ve posted on that sideblog and reblogged here. also not to self-promo but my ao3 is here and i’ve written several fics for them plus one multichapter that’s in-progress, which is what i want to be working on now rather than my applications lol. i don’t think i have a favorite but i will link this one in particular, because maia is in it and i love the potential for a bantering friendship with her.
anyway i may not actively post a lot of shadowhunters content anymore but they are and always will be my boys and i love them dearly, i’m glad you’re enjoying the show and feel free to send more asks about it if you want!!

Hey I wanted a fic where maybe Rafe or Max gets kidnapped and Malec just loses it and tracks down the person who took their little blueberry or Rafe. Also a really angsty fic where they are just sad and pissed off and all. I mean they’re both trying to be strong each other but kinda end up hurting each other or pushing the other away/having an argument or something. A lot of angst. But happy ending in the end obviously with a lot of tears and fluff. (badass+angsty dads)
Going to a carnival had been all Magnus’s idea, he’d asked just once if Alec thought the boys would be a good enough age to let them go and enjoy one and, despite his mistrust of large crowds, Alec had eventually come around and agreed they could take them. They’d spent time researching different ones across the world, but eventually came to a mutual agreement that perhaps state-side would have been safer, both for Alec’s knowledge of where all the institutes within them were in case of emergency, and also because of language barriers with both Alec and the kids.
“Here’s some money for you and your brother, Auntie loves you more than any of your other aunts and uncles no matter what they say.” Izzy said with a grin as she handed a small panda change purse to Rafael after tucking a few bills within it.
“You really don’t need to give them money, I have money, Isabelle,” Magnus mused with an arched brow, only to be waved off by the shorter figure as she stood and ruffled Rafael’s hair.
“Of course I do, they give me joy, I give them money. It’s an aunt thing.” Isabelle replied matter-of-factly with a toss of her hair. Magnus had not once ever heard of aunts or uncles just giving kids money solely for bringing them joy, but he wasn’t going to argue with her.
“You’re all set with Chairman and where all his necessities are…?” Magnus checked once more, his hand brushing Alec’s as the dark-haired male passed him, that bright smile flashed back at him over his shoulder in response.
“Yes, cabinet, cabinet, porch. Food, treats, toys and litter. Plus the…sweaters in the closet, brush and fashion collars in the drawer.” She knew she wouldn’t be changing his outfit and collar every day, but she knew it would please him that she remembered where they were ‘in the event he needed to look his best’.
“Come on, we’re going to be late for the train.” Alec returned carrying Max, having helped him change into his favorite dark blue jeans and his red T-Rex hood. The small tail on the base of it swayed over Alec’s arm with each long stride he took as if they were big dinosaurs, the boy accentuating the cuteness with loud ‘Rawr’s.
“Ready!” The boy said to Magnus excitedly as he noticed him in the room, lifting a little blue fist into the air. Max promptly broke into giggles as Alec wiggled his fingers against the briefly exposed belly, squirming then to try and get away from him. They’d only been a family for a couple years now, but it always warmed Magnus’s heart to know how well the boys had adapted to the change in their lives.
Looking to Rafael with a smile, Magnus offered a hand to the boy who looked clearly confused by the panda coin purse, tucking it quickly into Magnus’s pocket before his fingers curled around his father’s hand. It was something that Isabelle couldn’t help but make an excited noise over, quick to pull out her phone and snap a picture of the two, then motioned for Alec and Max to join in. “Get together, say ‘Cheese’!” That was what the mundane’s usually said to earn their smiles, but it only earned a questioning look from Rafael, his brow arching and lip curling in the picture, clearly telling of the ‘Why?’ that had accompanied the look.
~~“Oh, look at these cute little toys.” Magnus cooed, bopping the nose of one of the plush dragons at the vendors stand. “I know who would love one of these…” He gave a knowing glance to Max then, who’s eyes were larger than saucers, fingers already reaching for the green one.“Me! I have, please! Please!” The blue child said almost desperately, his horns hidden under a too large hood but threatening to spill out. Alec held on tight, knowing that if he kept any looser of a grip the boy would have easily spilled out. “PLEASE, PAPA!” “Okay, okay! It’s okay, Max!” Alec said with a laugh as he adjusted the boy in his arms to instead move him onto his shoulders. “I want to get it…” Rafael said after a long moment of contemplation. “I want the money now.““Rafe, save the money Izzy gave you, we’ll buy it, it’s no iss-” Magnus started, only to see Rafe’s sure and stubborn face looking up to him as he quickly replied with a firm ‘No.’
Magnus let out a quiet breath, knowing that stubborn look all too well- not only had he come from Buenos Aires with it, but it had only grown exponentially due to a certain Shadowhunter.
“Okay, okay. Let me get the money.” Magnus caved, releasing his hand to reach into the opposite pocket, his free hand already holding the long jacket out of the way. “You know, I’m very proud that you’re spending your money to get M…..Rafe?” The questioning tone had Alec turning his body back to Magnus and their son, having turned Max around so he could poke at a lantern bouncing around in the wind. Magnus seemed confused and rightfully so, as Rafael was gone. Alec turned once more as he looked at the vendor, who was busy selling to other kids, and to their right, an empty space. Nowhere for Rafael to hide, no one around to be blocking their view.“Where is he, Magnus?” Alec’s voice was low, panic already seeping in. A light pat to his head had him realizing he was now holding Max’s ankles too tight, as if he were subconsciously worried that the small one would disappear as well. “Magnus, where’s Rafael?”“I-I don’t know, I let go just for a second so I could get the change purse out of my pocket. He was right here, practically leaning against me, I don’t know how…” He turned quickly, the boys name loudly called then, in a desperate manner that only a nervous parent could manage.
“Rafe!” Max yelled from Alec’s shoulders, immediately catching on that something was wrong and his brother was missing. It didn’t take long before the other two separated and followed suit, calling the boys name.
Using his powers to try and trace any types of footprints from the area they’d been standing had let him see that there was Rafael’s and another set that had stopped behind the small set. The part that confused him most was the fact that neither of them had seen anyone approach, and those steps were where all ended, as if they just… vanished. There was no retreating footprints in any direction, no hint of leftover magic from the spot, like Rafael and whomever had him had just disappeared into thin air. Magnus felt terrible. This was his fault and his throat felt like it was closing up just realizing that if he hadn’t let go of Rafe’s hand, he’d still probably be here. They would be walking and enjoying the carnival, eating greasy foods that they would normally never feed to the children, giving them mountains of cotton candy bigger than their heads and dealing with the sugar-high repercussions later, as if it wasn’t hard enough getting Max to bed.
Magnus had let go, even after all the times he’d promised that beautiful little Argentinian boy that he never would.
Alec weaved through the crowd, calling for their son, his eyes tracing quickly through the crowds as he studied faces and different areas that could possibly be used to hide, though despite what he wanted to believe, he knew that Rafael wouldn’t do this. He was sneaky, rebellious, certainly a terror sometimes, but he knew better than this. This wasn’t something Rafael would put either of them through, especially not Magnus or Max, of whom was still on his shoulders, using the height advantage to look over the crowd, occasionally yelling the other boys name. “Rafael!” He joined in, looking down each alley he passed as the Nyx rune granted him nightvision to see if the boy had perhaps hidden in one.
“RAFAEL!” Magnus yelled, his voice almost cracking, the glamour on his eyes flickering as the magic began seeping from his fingers. Every bit of composure he’d had about himself and managed to hold for decades beginning to crumble away as he felt his heart sink lower and lower. When was the last time his stomach ached like this? Like there was some small, clawed beast digging away at everything within him in a desperate attempt to escape. As Alec’s same yell echoed from across the large crowd, Magnus swallowed, knowing their boy hadn’t been found yet and it only caused his throat to feel thick as he felt dread overcame him.
That dread only grew as he came across a small dirty area with shuffled footprints and two small drops of blood that seemed to have a purple sheen to it- certainly not Rafael’s. However, what was Rafael’s, was the small shoe resting against the wall nearby.
He’d been kidnapped.
“ALEXANDER!”
~~
Magnus’s fingers toyed with the panda change purse in his pocket as he and Alec made their way towards the building they had tracked Rafael to using Alec’s tracking rune. He hadn’t been able to stop touching it, knowing it was the very last thing Rafael had touched other than his own hand, the same way Alec kept the small shoe in the large front pocket of the hoodie he wore. Every emotion that passed the younger’s face broke Magnus’s heart, knowing how attached he was to the boy that he’d worked so hard to protect, and here he was, the cause of his panic.
“Magnus.” Came the quiet voice as Alec’s feet halted, swift unlike the slight stumble that Magnus’s normally steady feet were. “Come here.” It was followed up by Alec’s hand reaching out, pulling the warlock into his arms as his lips rested in the crook of his neck for a brief and gentle kiss before he lifted his head to meet the others shining cat-like eyes. “I can read it all over your face, this isn’t your fault.”
Magnus’s eyebrows furrowed as he tried looking away, only for Alec to turn his face towards him once more, wanting him to believe him. “I mean it, Magnus. This isn’t your fault.”“I let go of his hand–”“You let go of his hand to give him something he wanted. How were we supposed to know someone…or thing, was following us? How were we supposed to know someone wanted Rafe? This isn’t your fault, but we’re going to make the person who’s fault it is, pay.” Alec’s voice had become lower in register, raw as if he were going to cry, though there was more anger in his eyes than sorrow. Not at Magnus, but at the kidnapper.
“You’re right. You’re… Of course you’re right. He’s still here, right?” Magnus finally caved, motioning to the corner store they were outside of, looking like it had seen better days and had been abandoned for years. He could feel magic coming off of it in waves, no doubt there were wards littering the walls, which could only mean it had been a warlock that had taken Rafael.
“Yes, he’s still here. Max, do you remember what to do if anyone comes near you?” He asked the small boy holding his hand, who looked up to Alec with a determined nod. They’d been working on his magic once he’d proved he could reject advances of a demon, starting small with defensive maneuvers that were easy to master, especially with a tiny bit of help from ‘Bapa’.
The trio made their way into the building, Alec’s arm tight around Max, whom he was now carrying to make sure they stayed together. Their attempt to create a portal to get him to safety with Izzy had been something they didn’t want to do out of fear of losing him like Rafe, but it had also been something Max didn’t want, the small blue one screaming like a banshee and clinging to Alec’s arms. “I help save brother! I HELP!” This was the outcome of what it had led to.
“Ah look, your saviors finally found you.” A lisped voice called from a higher area, Alec’s gaze rising to the stairwell to the right overlooking the area they stood in. “He was expecting us,” Magnus said lowly, just enough for Alec to hear, “There are wards everywhere, we shouldn’t have been able to get in if he didn’t think we’d find them.”
“Give me my brother!” Max yelled, an angry growl following as he glared up to the man above them, only to look more than insulted when the man laughed at him and came out of the shadows one step at a time.
“How cute, you brought another one.” The man on the stairs mused, another voice following his from the corner of the room as Rafe was pushed out in front of the lithe figure, his hands bound behind him. This voice was higher pitched and questioningly female, their face perfectly androgynous with the sharp facial features and hawk-like nose, though their hair fell in long, well cared for curls around their shoulder. “The blue one could fetch a pretty penny in the market.”
Magnus could feel the air around them shift, this was the one the wards were created from, this was the one behind Rafe being taken. However, it wasn’t just their presence that caused the tension, he realized, as he heard the ragged inhale beside him from Alec, Max slowly lowered to the floor behind them. Magnus’s hand shifted, magic swirling and weaving tightly to his fingers, only bits sparking back to create an invisible wall behind them to ensure there wasn’t an ambush or anyone to appear behind Max and take him as well.
Alec’s voice changed then, in a way Magnus had never heard before. This voice was so much more than the authoritative leader voice he carried with the other Shadowhunters, this voice was a raw, deep and threatening voice. Something about it sent chills up Magnus’s spine, goosebumps hidden by the fine jacket covering his arms- something that perhaps in a bedroom setting would be enjoyable, but here… this voice was terrifying.
“Give us. Our son. Now.”
It was that voice that had the fear in Magnus’s body shift, all that worry about how this could all go down where they weren’t just dealing with some Mundane or simpler Downworlder, morphing into pure, unadulterated rage. Like someone who poured gasoline on wood before igniting it, Magnus’s powers began forming not only on hands, but traveled like flames all up his body. He was ready for anything and he felt Alec shift beside him, his legs parting in a stance that was ready to attack, one he knew well from the training Alec had given the boys almost every night.
“If only it were that easy. Your kind, you shadowhunters, killed people we loved. We took him as payment, an eye for an eye, ya know?” The androgynous one said in their strange tone, which Magnus finally realized sounded as if two people were speaking at the same time.
“We considered making him a slave, but that’s too good. Bait was better. Now we have all of you. Two Shadowhunters in one room, and two more warlocks. One that can be trained by me.” The voice once floating above them was now level, the man looking past them at Max as his hand came to rest on Rafe’s shoulder.
The bow appeared in Alec’s hand the minute the man touched Rafe, and even from his side Magnus could see the way Alec’s hand shook when nocking the arrow. The bowstring was held but not drawn, his patience small, lingering, but still there as he’d been trained to have. Magnus shifted his hand over, resting it lightly on his arm in a ways to calm him, hoping that just reminding the Shadowhunter that he was there with him, that it would help.
“The only person that will be training Max, is myself.” Magnus said quietly, his voice dripping with the warning of every threat that could have possibly been flung. “It’ll be okay, Rafe, I promise. I’m sorry.”
Briefly, Magnus’s gaze had dropped to their son, wanting to assure him that nothing would happen to him. The glow of blue in his hand only grew as Rafael was roughly pulled back, pushed into a chair and quickly enchanted so he couldn’t escape. What may have been something to bring kids to tears was nothing to Rafael, though the boys chest heaved and his mouth was gagged, his hands bound so tight Magnus knew he’d have to heal him, his eyes were clear of tears. If anything, they reflected the rage his parents had, that anger something that Alec remembered when they had first met in the Shadow Market. Rafael was keeping his calm, staying cool and collected and waiting for his moment like Alec had trained him in emergency situations.
Patience, unlike Alec, was not something he could find in himself when those he loved were threatened. The minute the man stepped forward with a glowing sword in hand, Magnus’s magic had already grown in hand, the ball quickly flung in his direction to disarm him. The androgynous one seemed to be ready for it, diverting it into the wall to their right, easily shattering the doorframe and quarter of the wall there.
It was queue enough to Alec who drew the bowstring and aimed his arrow at the warlock, only halting from releasing it due to Rafael being directly behind them. Alec’s breath escaped short and sharp, but the small boy seemed to understand and with a muffled yell, he threw himself sideways, causing the chair he was on to tip. It was less than a second before the arrow was released, hurtling in the air towards the warlock that had looked back to see what the movement behind them was. There was a thud as it landed in their shoulder, a howled shriek of pain leaving them as their fingers quickly moved to rip it free.
Magnus had wasted no time hurling everything he had in him at the male by the stairs, balls of sparking magic and energy chasing him along as he dove to avoid being hit by each. “Max, get ready, baby.” He called back to the little one, finally stepping forward and away from him to go after the man. Max was careful to stay where he was, knowing the protection Magnus had put up around him would keep him safe enough unless it was destroyed, though it was clear in his little face that the boy wanted to go to his brother.
“Vena, take out the warlock!” The man yelled to the one now tossing the arrow aside and forgetting about their hostage behind them and instead running at Alec and Max, their own magic beginning to travel up their arms and shoulder, causing the platinum curls to begin to float as a frustrated scream began forming in their chest. A blast curled it’s way towards Alec like orange tentacles on the air as his arrows, shot in rapid succession, fell out of their way. Magnus glanced back and focused one hand towards the barrier around Max, quickly working out the beginning of a spell to strengthen the ward, his attention failing him just enough for the ringleader to take advantage, rushing him and throwing his shoulder into Magnus’s chest. The taller of the two went down with a grunt, his barrier flickering as he shoved the man off of him, his fist going out and connecting with a stubbly jaw, his second going in a follow up right hook.
“NO!” Max shouted as he and Alec were approached by Vena when Magnus went down, his own little amount of magic feeding and surging off of the guard that Magnus had put up. A protective bubble of purple energy forming around himself and lifted him into the air, the defense and attack mechanism he and Magnus had worked on for months on end to perfect. The warlock lifted a hand to try and grab him through it, only to hiss loudly in pain, their hand smoking as it pulled back. Alec’s seraph blade was in his hand, glowing and flying through the air within seconds of Max’s yell, and not long after, Vena’s freshly severed hand was falling to the floor.
“Don’t touch my fucking kids.“ He panted as he regained his defensive stance, Max moving to float beside his father. “Max, stay in there, do not come out. Go stay by your brother.” He said as he turned the blade in his hand, pacing at Vena’s side as they writhed in pain on the floor, holding their stump of a wrist. “Come on, you wanna go after them, you’ll have to take us out, first. Get up.” He said as he lifted his arm and wiped sweat off his forehead, his body tense and ready. “Magnus, you alright back there?”
“Great!” Magnus called back with a loud grunt as he was shoved into a wall, feeling stronger now that he didn’t have as much going on in protecting Max. “So,” he pinned his opponent against the wall, his magic swirling around his neck as the flame-like magic reached his eyes. “Very,” the magic tightened and the man gagged, his feet lifting off the ground. “Great.” He finished as the man was slammed against the wall, knocked unconscious by how hard his head hit. Magnus’s attention turned then to Vena, lifting themselves up from the ground and cradling their lack of hand to their body.
“Are we done here? Have you learned your lesson?” Magnus asked as he tried to catch his breath, standing between Vena and their children. “We have a parade to go to, I’ve spent far too long planning this for you to ruin it for my kids, or anyone else’s kids.” He looked back as Rafe forced his arms around his legs, bringing them to the front and pulling at the cloth in his mouth as he tried to get free. “Stay in there, Max.” He followed up with Alec’s earlier words, not wanting to risk anything until everything was cleared.
“By the authority of the Clave, you’re both under arrest.” Alec’s grip tightened around the hilt of the sword, knowing fully well that they both wanted to do much more damage just for the trauma they put the kids through. Magnus harnessed what he had left of his energy, a portal opened beside him and moments later a few guards from the local Institute stepped through, grabbing both Vena and the unconscious man nearby. Before they had gone to find Rafael, they had made sure to get in touch with the nearest institute to have them on the ready. Alec watched them and looked to the one whom he’d spoken to, knowing he was the head of their Institute. “Make sure they go straight to Idris, straight to trial. Tell them to not show any mercy.”
Once they had gone through and the portal had closed, Alec let out the breath he’d been holding in, the seraph blade dropping to the floor as his hands rested on his knees and he bowed his head. Magnus moved immediately to Rafe, undoing the bindings around his wrists and legs, untying the fabric from around his neck where it had once been in his mouth. Max dropped out of the bubble and rushed towards Alec, who quickly scooped him up, his face burying in the small boys neck as he hugged him tight to himself, a relieved sigh muffled by Max’s sweatshirt. Rafe’s arms immediately went out to wrap around Magnus’s neck, the worry heavy on his face and Magnus knew that it wasn’t even for himself, but for he and Alec. His sassy, stubborn, selfless boy.
“I’m sorry. Lo lamento mucho, mi amor.” Magnus whispered, his arms wrapping tightly around Rafael as if he was afraid to let him go again, as if they were still around and about to take their boy away from him again. Rafe’s fingers curled in Magnus’s shirt, his breathing quick but stabilizing as he calmed in the elder’s arms, the tension leaving both their bodies. Alec’s arms soon joined as he dropped to his knees beside them, Max trapped (happily) between all three, squirming in between Magnus and Rafe then to hug his older brother.
“Do you want to go home? We can go home if you want. We don’t need to stay.” Alec asked Rafael before his lips rested on top of the boys head, pressing one, two, three kisses to the sweaty mop of curls.
There was a long moment of silence as Rafe looked between Magnus’s many necklaces, at the blood that had dripped down from his nose during his fight with the man earlier. They shifted to the side, to the rune covered arm wrapped around Magnus’s back, the other behind himself and keeping him close. Finally they rested on Max, his little face full of worry over his silence, the hood having fallen away to reveal the horns beneath as he looked up at his big brother. He took a deep breath and shook his head, trying to offer a smile to Max.“Max should see the parade. Sea feliz.” He said up to Magnus, who’s face softened as he offered a small smile and a nod.
“Okay,” Magnus started, then paused, “only on the condition that you let me carry you. Please?” It wasn’t that he didn’t trust it not to happen again, he would have held tighter to his hand, but now he just wanted to keep him as close and safe as possible.
~~
“A DINOSAUR!” Max yelled happily over the loud music played by the passing marching band, a large dinosaur balloon passing by as walkers held the strings securely. Rafael held onto the green dinosaur they’d been looking at earlier, keeping it close to himself as he silently watched everyone passing by, Magnus’s hand gently stroking his back as his free arm supported the boy sitting on his hip. They had come to the agreement that if at any time Rafael wanted to leave, there would be no questions or hesitation, they would portal right out.
“Want to get some cotton candy?” Magnus whispered to Rafael as a vendor approached with his cart. Rafael’s fingers moved to his pocket, carefully pulling out the panda coin purse that Alec had stashed there earlier, offering it up to Magnus.
“Keep the money, Rafe. We’ll always take care of you.”

***Well... clearly a lot has happened during this on-going hiatus, huh? I mean, I could maybe go on another rant of this absolute nonsense but I believe you are just as tired as me. Besides, there are way better things to spend your time with---reading Malec fanfics, for example. I dunno about you but those fics always cheer me up and put me in a better mood, so I hope this will be the case for you, too.
Anyway, thanks so much for all the love for the previous rec’s and I hope you enjoy this 8th(!) edition of Malec fanfic rec’s as much as the other ones. As always, I am curious to know what you think of it, so let me know. Even more so, leave a comment or/and kudo for the authors---we all need the validation and it is just a nice gesture after their fics kept you entertained for a little while.***

SET ME IN MOTION by @lemonoclefox [ M | AU | 132k | complete ]
“Is that your way of asking me to cook for you sometime?” Alec says. “'Cause I will.” The moment the words escape his mouth, Alec finds himself slightly panicking. Because he does not talk like that, ever―in a way that might even be considered flirting―and he still doesn’t understand what it is about Magnus that brings stuff like that out of him. More importantly, he has a boyfriend. Magnus, however, just looks mildly surprised as their eyes meet. “My, my. Master chef, good family name, and charming?” Magnus tilts his head ever so slightly. “Careful, Mr. Lightwood,” he says in a low, teasing voice, mouth curving up in a smile. “You’re gonna make me swoon.” ---
One night, Magnus spots a handsome stranger in the elevator of his apartment building – which wouldn’t be a big deal if said stranger didn’t turn out to be dating Magnus’s neighbor. The stranger soon becomes Alec, and their paths end up crossing more than once. A tentative friendship develops as they slowly get to know each other, and they both find that it’s effortless in a way neither of them has ever known. It's only when other kinds of feelings start getting involved that things become a bit more complicated.

Alec kissed him like he had the first time, desperately, but tenderly, with all the rashness of a man in love. It was Magnus who pulled back, thumb gently brushing over Alec’s cheekbone. “I’m going to miss this,” he said, voice pitched low, “when we get back to Alicante.” “As will I,” Alec allowed, bowing his head to rest his forehead against Magnus’. “But I know we can show them how it’s done, you and I.”
As long as he had this, the unconditional love of an extraordinary man, the gift of his passion behind closed doors and the tenderness of his eyes in the secrecy of his mind, as long as there was their burning bodies melting together to express what words couldn’t, Alec didn’t need to worry. What was the worst that could happen?
A TINY SPARK by @magicandarchery [ E | AU | 55.7k | complete ]
As a firefighter for the FDNY, Alec Lightwood and his battalion respond to an emergency call for an apartment fire. After rushing a young, soon-to-be mother out of the burning building and to safety, Alec must deliver her newborn baby.
He never expected the little girl to spark an inexplicable bond between them. After a prior adoption fell through in a devastating way, should he and Magnus even hope they might be able to adopt her?

On Ice
Or, the first part of my Malec Mafia AU inspired by @gingergenower and her amazing AU series!!
read on ao3
Pouring a glass of whiskey neat, Alec downs half of it in one long swallow.
He doesn’t look at the man behind him, doesn’t pay him any mind. Over the sound of constricted breathing-- clinically, Alec catalogs that the guy has a punctured lung and at least two broken ribs-- he can just make out the sound of birds chirping.
It’s a beautiful April afternoon and Alec sighs a little to himself. His work is never done.
Bringing out his phone as he takes a leisurely sip of his drink, he curses internally at the blank notification bar.
Alec’s waiting on a text and he can only hold off so long before his guest loses too much blood to be useful.
Refilling his glass, Alec turns around and leans against his desk.
Tied to the wooden chair in the center of Alec’s office, the man looks a little gruesome in the stark light of day. He used a gym-- An Athletic Club-- as his front and the skylights aren’t kind to his newest friend.
They highlight every bruise, scrape, and cut littering his face and torso and Alec really needs Jace to fucking text him before the bastard dies on him and he loses a lead.
Staring dispassionately at the man, Alec says, “I don’t know why you’re protecting him. He’d sell you out in a goddamn heartbeat if he was sitting in that chair. Why don’t you save us all a lot of time and trouble and just give me what I’m asking for.”
“Fuck you,” the man spits and Alec hears the wheezing of his chest become more pronounced at his vehement reply. It sounds like air whistling through tissue paper and Alec knows that he’s losing time fast.
Pushing himself from the edge of the desk, Alec straightens and downs the last of his whiskey. Setting the glass down with a dull thud, he starts toward the center of the office. He watches the man cower back instinctively and doesn’t try to stop the smile that comes over his face.
“Yeah, you should be afraid,” he says quietly. Stopping next to the table, Alec mulls over which tool to use but ultimately decides against any altogether.
He’s always preferred to use his fists.
Without warning, he gives a backhanded slap that rings loud in the room. It’s not enough to do much more than sting but Alec needs to waste some time.
The man’s head snaps to the side and Alec watches as he spits out blood-speckled saliva onto his quartz floor.
The next punch isn’t so forgiving and there’s a cut on the lackey’s cheek that has blood beading almost immediately.
Leaning close, Alec uses a finger to tip the man’s face up. He stares into his one good eye, frowning.
“You don’t get to dirty up my office any more than you already have just by your pathetic presence. Do not ever spit on my goddamn floor again. You can choke for all I care. Understood?”
The man nods mutely and closes the eye that hasn’t swelled shut yet.
“I didn’t give you permission to close your eyes, did I?” Alec waits until the man opens a bloodshot eye before he continues. He takes a step back and looks down as he considers what he needs.
Tone conversational, he starts, “Here’s what I know: you and your brother Jacoby were selling vikes laced with fentanyl in my fucking territory. I also know that my customers come to me because they trust my product. I don’t lace my shit with anything. You killed someone, Jasper--”
Alec breaks off as he sees the surprise over his face. Stepping toward the chair, Alec lowers his voice menacingly. “That’s right, Jasper. I know your brother’s name and I know yours. I know you rent a studio together in the Bronx and I know that your landlord is an elderly grandmother of four with a fondness for pecan sandies. I know more than you think I do so I suggest you tell me what I want to know and stop wasting my goddamn time.”
There’s a beat of silence before Jasper painfully swallows, his tongue darting out to wet his lips. He winces as his tongue runs over a cut but takes a shaky breath before whispering, “You don’t know where he is, though, do you?”
He has the gall to smirk, something ugly yet victorious coming over his expression. Alec’s just about to say fuck it and finish him off when his phone vibrates in his pocket.
He glares as he reaches for his phone, unlocking it just to see one text message.
Finished.
Smiling, Alec reads the second text that comes through almost immediately after and replies to the messages before locking his phone and sliding it back into his pocket.
He crouches down until he can meet Jasper’s eyes from where he’s staring down at the floor.
“You were a dead man as soon as my customer was pronounced DOA on the fucking sidewalk. You don’t come onto my turf and try to screw me and my customers because do you know what happens if you do?”
Alec waits for a nod before finishing with, “Your brother dies in the backroom of Jack’s Gambling House right before I gut you where you sit.”
Jasper’s eyes widen in shock before he seems to collapse in grief.
“That’s right, Jasper,” Alec says coldly. “Turns out we didn’t need you after all. I have men all over this damned city and all it took was sending a few feelers out before I learned of your brother’s pervasive gambling habit and that he owes Jack himself almost eighty grand in IOUs.”
Shaking his head, Alec sends the man a sympathetic smile. His eyes remain glacial.
“I hear he was cheating during a hand of five-card stud and one of the other players took issue with that. I hear they shot him over the table and he was dead before he fell to the ground.”
“Jacoby,” Jasper whispers dully and Alec stands from his position before he reaches for a vial on the table next to the half dozen knives also resting there.
“I defend what’s mine,” Alec says coolly. “I can’t have young startups like you fucking up my business, now can I? If I let that happen, I’d be out of business in a week and dead in the gutter a day later. Here’s hoping your brother’s waiting for you on the other side, Jasper.”
Alec inserts the needle into Jasper’s arm without ceremony and depresses the plunger with clinical disinterest. The man doesn’t even seem to notice Alec’s movements and less than a minute later, his head drops down as he loses consciousness followed swiftly by his life.
Stepping back, Alec grimaces at the mess. Luckily, he doesn’t have to call out before the door’s opening.
“Everything taken care of, boss?”
Alec smiles up at Maia and lets it turn warm. “Yeah,” he replies briskly. “The twins are no longer an issue.”
Turning, Alec starts toward his ensuite. Over his shoulder, he continues, “I’m going to take a shower and by the time I come out I want him disposed of and I want my office set to rights.”
Maia nods. “You got it, Alec.”
He’s just reached the bathroom door when Maia speaks again. “Don’t forget you have a meeting with Bane at four.”
Alec hears the sneer in her tone, the biting condescension at the mention of his biggest adversary. She’s been with him for two years and has proven herself remarkably intelligence-- a quick thinker that wasn’t easily rattled.
Not quite smart enough for the master, though, Alec thinks wryly.
He looks back as he takes a step into the bathroom. “I know,” he says easily. “We’re supposed to discuss territory disputes that have cropped up from the past few weeks. I expect him to receive a warm welcome when he arrives. Have him escorted to my office and leave him here if I’m not out of the shower yet. As long as that door stays shut, no one is to disturb us. Is that clear?”
Alec puts the barest brush of warning in his tone and Maia frowns a little even as she acquiesces. “Of course, boss.”
Leaving her to clean up his office, Alec shuts the door behind him and stares at himself in the mirror.
Turning on the water, he cups it in his hands before splashing some on his face. There was a trace of blood along his cheek and as he reaches for a towel to dry his face, he catalogs perfectly ordinary features.
He’s twenty seven years old and the biggest name in the New York Underworld. Well, really he supposes it depends on the week.
He owns half the city and has unfettered access to the other half.
He sees hazel eyes that glint green in the right light and a face that’s just starting to show the faintest of laugh lines. His hair is dark and perpetually messy and his mouth is a stern line.
Alec rules his small corner of the world with a fair if strict hand. He keeps his employees in line and the business has only grown since he inherited things just a few weeks after his eighteenth birthday.
He’s also in a bad mood and the business he’d concluded a few moments ago wasn’t even on his radar.
Undressing, Alec thinks about his plans for the rest of the day. Thankfully, the past couple of weeks had been quiet. Alec’s learned well to take the downswings when he can sure enough, it always fades.
He's been hearing rumblings of something happening and while he hasn't learned the particulars yet, Alec knows that he'll wish he'd made the most of this quiet when he had the chance.
Stepping into the shower, Alec turns the water to just shy of scalding. His meeting with Bane will take the rest of the day, Alec thinks with a smile and as he reaches for the shampoo, his eyes turn warm enough to melt the polar caps.
Just a few minutes later, he’s turning the water off and reaching for a towel to wrap around his hips.
Alec brushes his teeth and debates before moving to the other side of the bathroom with a beleaguered sigh. While one door opened to his office the other side of the bathroom led to a bedroom that he kept well-maintained. He didn’t sleep here as often as he had when he’d first taken over the operation, but it was convenient to keep some of his wardrobe close and have something to sleep on that didn’t have a loose spring.
Changing into another suit, Alec walks over to his selection of cuff links and chooses the Cartier onyx.
He runs a comb through his hair once before giving up and smooths down his jacket as he starts toward his office. Looking down at his watch that had been a commemorative gift of sorts, he sees that Magnus should be arriving at any moment.
Alec’s just stepping out of the bathroom when the door to his office opens and Bane walks in just before Maia follows.
“Mr. Lightwood said that you were to remain here until he arrives. Can I interest you in any refreshments while you wait?”
It sounds like Maia’s speaking through gritted teeth but he’ll give her points for asking at all.
Chuckling, Alec interrupts, “Thank you for offering, Maia, but I think I’ll take it from here. If that’s alright with you, Mr. Bane?”
Magnus’s eyes had found his as soon as he’d started speaking and they don’t leave Alec’s face as he replies, “I’m sure you can give me whatever I require, Mr. Lightwood.”
Gaze focused on the man before him, Alec’s attention doesn’t waver as he dismisses Maia.
As soon as the door closes, Alec walks closer. He keeps going until he’s within Magnus’s reach. “Right on time,” he murmurs.
With a coy smile, Magnus responds, “I do my best to stay on your good side, Mr. Lightwood, and I know how much you despise tardiness.”
Alec grins as he takes Magnus’s hand. His thumb sweeps under the cuff of his shirt to sweep against his pulse. “I appreciate the effort, Mr. Bane, and I do hope that I’ve remained in your good graces since we last spoke. I’d hate to do anything to jeopardize our working relationship.”
With his free hand, Magnus runs a hand over Alec’s shirt before he slips the top button from its hole. “I assure you, darling, I’ve been floating on a cloud since I left you this morning.”
At that, Alec frowns, staring at Magnus unimpressed. “That’s funny because I haven’t been on cloud nine since I woke up to an empty bed.”
Laughing a little, Magnus brings a hand to his cheek and Alec closes his eyes as he nuzzles into it. “Poor Alexander,” Magnus coos. “I wish that I hadn’t had to leave you so early either but you know I was expecting that shipment in the Bay and I had to check it over myself.”
Alec grumbles but doesn’t say anything. Instead, he brings Magnus close for a lingering kiss. “You’re lucky you’re so cute.”
Pulling back, Magnus repeats, “Cute? You could have used dashing or debonair or dangerously good looking but instead you think to use cute? I’m wounded.”
Alec grins at Magnus’s glare. “Adorable.”
Sighing, Magnus pulls Alec in for another smacking kiss before taking Alec’s hand and guiding him to the couch near the balcony. It’s a warm day and the french doors are open to let in the spring breeze.
Alec makes a mental note to thank Maia for thinking to air out the room after his appointment.
Settling down on a couch that they’d picked out together, Alec throws an arm around Magnus’s shoulders and urges him closer.
“Any new business to discuss,” he asks idly, far more focused on the way the sunlight is hitting the blond streak in Magnus’s hair.
Humming a little, Magnus replies, “Not that I can think of.” He looks up at Alec, resting his head on his shoulder. “I believe that I’m in first place this month.”
Narrowing his eyes, Alec says, “You have your books finalized for March?”
“I brought in another eight grand on the night of the 31st. That brings my total profit for last month to about three thousand dollars more than you, I do believe.” Magnus preens a little, looking satisfied.
Alec glares at Magnus for a second before he deflates, kissing the top of his head. “Good job, babe. I guess you won fair and square.”
“It’s only fair since you beat me in both January and February. You had an exceptionally productive start to the new year. People were starting to whisper that I’d lost my touch, that you were finally winning this little rivalry of ours.”
Alec laughs and squeezes Magnus close. “You know that no one knows of the little bet between us. I’m sure your reputation is safe.”
Magnus sends him an incredulous look. “Are you kidding me? With the way Maia was looking at me, I thought that my reign had come to a swift end. She really doesn’t like me.”
“She doesn’t know you, Magnus. Her loyalty lies with me and she doesn’t like my biggest rival and she especially doesn’t like it when he visits my office and is left unescorted.”
“About that,” Magnus asks. “How hasn’t she figured it out yet?”
“I honestly don’t know but I’m not going to question it.”
Mulling over Alec’s response, it’s quiet for a minute before Magnus responds, “What would our world do if they found out that we aren’t bloodthirsty adversaries but in a relationship stretching back years? Their little minds would explode like so much shrapnel.”
Agreeing, Alec says, “We decided a long time ago that we weren’t going to come forward with our relationship. It’s better for both of us if we keep our connection secret.”
“Yeah, but don’t you sometimes wonder at what would happen if everyone knew? Herondale would realize that when she bragged to me about killing your favorite arms smuggler to try to seal a deal and her butler was the victim of a hit and run the next week that it wasn’t all coincidence.”
“And Camille would put the pieces together and realize that by antagonizing you over turf in South Brooklyn, she signed the death warrant of her favorite protege. They might put it together and realized the mistakes they’ve made but then what? They’d realize that instead of fighting us on separate fronts, that instead we're unified and our control reigns over eighty percent of New York. They’d realize that you're my biggest weakness and that I’m yours and that’s leverage I’m not willing to put into anyone’s hands.”
“How right you are, darling,” Magnus says softly. “I wasn’t suggesting that we come clean. I was just thinking about how they’re all fools-- and how glad I am that they are still so astoundingly unobservant.”
Magnus brings him down for a lingering kiss and Alec hums a little as he shifts for a better angle.
“I love you,” he murmurs against his lips.
“And I love you, Alexander.”
Alec’s hands go to Magnus’s shirt and he starts for the row of buttons before pulling back abruptly. “You don’t have anything else today, do you?”
Shaking his head, Magnus just says, “I’m all yours,” before grabbing Alec’s shirt and kissing him breathless.
Alec missed out on morning sex because Magnus had business to tend to and he has no compunction about making up for lost time now.
He’s just reaching for Magnus’s fly when the office door swings open. They spring apart-- Alec ready to unleash hell-- only to instead roll his eyes the second he sees who had the audacity to interrupt his meeting.
“Damn it, Jace, what are you doing here?” Alec’s voice is gruff as he shoves a hand through his hair, leaning against the couch to stare up at the ceiling in frustration.
Closing the door behind him, Jace leans against it and sends the two of them an arch look. “I don’t know who you else you thought it could be. As if anyone else in this building has the balls to walk in on Lightwood when he’s busy.”
Jace heads straight to the drink cart Magnus had insisted he buy early on in their acquaintance and makes a vodka twist in a few efficient steps.
He doesn’t say anything and Alec shares a look at Magnus about the continued silence. He sees the tension in his back but Jace takes his sweet time, drinking almost half his glass before he turns around.
“We have a problem,” he says grimly.
Alec straightens away from Magnus though he snags his hand and absently plays with his rings.
“I’m waiting,” Alec says after a few beats of silence.
Glaring, Jace knocks back the rest of his drink. “I don’t think the twins were working alone.”
“So?”
“So, asshat, I think they had a bigger fish in the game.”
Magnus shrugs as he looks between Jace and Alec. “Alec told me of his plans last night and I think that whomever this accomplice was, that they’re going to be running scared. Alec cut off two branches and that has to serve as warning enough.”
‘I agree with Magnus,” Alec says. He stares at nothing as he thinks potential fallout. “Killing two of his dealers is not only a warning to any other men thinking of poaching on what’s mine but if there was a third? He’s probably scared shitless. He’s probably underground as we speak.”
Shrugging, Alec sits back, wraps an absent arm around Magnus.
Jace watches them with narrowed eyes. “It looks like you two have everything figured out.”
Magnus and Alec look at each other before shrugging and looking back at Jace, Alec’s second in command and best assassin on his payroll.
“It seems to have worked itself out.”
“And what if I said that while I was checking Jacoby’s pockets, I saw an incoming text.”
He doesn’t say anything else after that and Alec rolls his eyes at his brother’s penchant for dramatics. “What did the message say?”
Chewing on his bottom lip, Jace is quiet for a split second before he looks up and meets Alec’s eyes.
Whatever Alec sees stops him cold. Jace has had his back since the beginning, since before they both got roped into the Lightwood Legacy that was as tarnished as it was seductive.
“It’s not what it said,” Jace finally continues. “It’s who sent it.”
You could hear a pin drop in the bright comfort of Alec’s office when Jace finishes, “It was from Verlac.”
Alec sucks in a breath and beside him, he feels Magnus turn rigid. “What,” he asks, dazed.
Jace catches Alec’s eyes and he knows that he looks just as winded as his brother. “Valentine is back and he’s coming after you.”

I think this is part 15 of season 2, episode 12 IM OVER THIS JACE SHIT FOCUS ON MALEC INSTEAD “you are not your own” CONTINUED
198. funny how in season one jace is like I don’t know who I am and now he does I guess
Tumblr media Tumblr media
199. and by birth right, she means you’ll get a promotion over someone (Alec) who actually deserves it and now she will hand you everything you could want. I really don’t care if jace has trauma, he has so much privilege and gets everything handed to him. at least Alec makes mistakes and works through it and doesn’t get things handed to him. it’s been a second of this scene and I already hate it
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
200. and yes it vexes me because jace gets everything handed to him and they’re like “oh you’ve been through it” and excuse all the terrible shit he did. tired of him getting a pass because of childhood trauma. YOU ALMOST GOT MAGNUS KILLED TWICE but fucking go on, get a promotion you don’t deserve. literally imogen would’ve happily let him die if he wasn’t a herondale and now he’s the greatest thing she saw
201. now I can upload all the gifs I forgot let’s start with Alec
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
202. I love these
Tumblr media Tumblr media
203. past episode of Magnus + his past
Tumblr media Tumblr media
204. the show acting like Magnus would have Alec as A. Lightwood in his phone when it was Alec in season one. please 🙄 THAT IS ALEXANDER ONLY
Tumblr media
205. just a few other ones I missed
Tumblr media Tumblr media
206. I rewatched episode 6 so Alexander season 2 count is: 18
whooooooo that is it for the gifs. I originally thought I would have more but I think I’m overthinking it
207. let’s wrap it up. what I like about this episode: Alan and Harry’s acting is top notch. they have the vulnerability and the essence of Magnus and valentine down. I like the idea of the body swap but it’s poorly executed. seeing someone as famous and powerful as Magnus getting thrown into valentines body and having to convince Alec that he really is Magnus is a major feat to pull off. I love seeing Malec reunion and watching Magnus finally be free. I do like the Sebastian stuff but I don’t feel it was necessary to overboard us with all of that plus the Malec stuff. Matt also killed it as usual. I’m sure he hated every second of this lmao
208. I have more stuff I don’t like: this whole storyline. it should have been longer. Magnus and Alec reunited is literally not even five minutes long. they hardly have a discussion about it. Magnus and his trauma deserved to have more screen time. it’s just not enough. too many things are happening at once. Izzy, Simon, Raphael, clary, jace, Sebastian- when the sole focus should be Malec and valentine. you can’t just throw something major as a traumatic experience, tie it in an episode and say done. Alec is done wrong in this episode, it seems very out of character to not believe Magnus and I’m really tired of the “I trust jace more than anyone” Alec. if Alec should have asked for advice, it should be Izzy. this storyline with Malec is in bad taste in my opinion
209. I was never a fan of Simon + clary and they have short scenes but I don’t feel that was handled well either. Clary basically lied to Simon and he’s like hey that’s okay!!!!!!!!! I seriously don’t get why Simon is attracted to her in the first place
210. Izzy Raphael Simon stuff was badly handled. Izzy intentionally hurt Raphael and then they end up trying to make Raphael the bad guy. he had every right to be upset. Izzy’s addiction storyline is also kind of a joke when you think about the show timeline is supposedly two-three months. addiction doesn’t work that way. it’s a long process. there are important themes in this episode: trauma addiction guilt and they aren’t handled well. Alec will feel vastly guilty for the part he played in Magnus’s trauma.
211. I think this would have been great to have Alec turn around and say “Jace just stop. Magnus has almost died twice because of your stupidity and you’ve been a self conceited tiresome dick for years. I’ve had it. I’ve made amends with clary and you haven’t done anything to earn my forgiveness for how you treated me. you get to carry on while I deal with the consequences. you and clary treat me, Izzy, and Magnus awful while we do everything for you. this is a one sided parabatai bond and I’m cutting it. I will no longer do things for you so good luck the next time you fuck up. also go fucking apologize to Magnus for harming him so many times and apologize for Izzy for being a shitty person. good riddance, now LEAVE OFF YA GO”
and I really hate how imogen is “now you’ll see what it’s like being family and you’ve had everything taken away but now you get everything” when this dude had everything before. he has Alec and Izzy constantly saving his ass as well as Magnus. Clary is obsessed with him, Simon protects him- which if you bullied me and tried to undermine my friendship/relationship- I’d hate you. even Maia gets over her jace hatred. literally no one is allowed to hate jace (and clary) and has to love jace at all times. yeah his parents are dead (but so was Harry potter’s and he wasn’t as insufferable about it) but he has all the support he could desire. WHAT MORE DO YOU FUCKING NEED
Alec has put you first before his own fucking boyfriend. Magnus has almost died twice because of your stupidity while Alec has almost died three times because of you. my problem with Jace (well I have many) is that he never feels bad for his actions. with the soul sword, he feels bad for half a second and then goes on his way not even minding that hundreds are dead because he didn’t use his brain. all the stuff he did with valentine and he didn’t face any punishment for it. he never faced any punishment for anything. downworlders revolt and the clave makes the downworld the issue as if they shouldn’t be mad that their family and friends died. but hey, jace is a herondale so he can get away with anything. he could literally be a mass murderer and the clave and everyone else would protect him and excuse his actions
212. id honestly give this episode a 5.6. I want to like it but there is so much wrong with it. it’s just poorly executed like all of CC’s books. no wonder Matt hates it lmao it does have good parts but it’s just a migraine to watch honestly
ALEC SHOULD HAVE KNOWN SOONER
MALEC DESERVED MORE SCREEN TIME
AND BETTER TREATMENT
SHUT UP ABOUT JACE ALREADY
I don’t mind Sebastian but LEAVE CLARY GO
IZZY MAKES ME MAD
AND THAT ADDICTION STORYLINE IS POORLY DONE
Tumblr media
212 is the number!!!!!! and yes, that is season 2, episode 12 combined!!!!!! episode 13 is next and I’m honestly stoked because it’s going to be a bunch of racist and homophobic shadowhunters get mad when the downworlders finally say hey I’ve had enough of y’all killing my friends and family. and the writers have Alec messing up AGAIN. SERIOUSLY CUT THE MAN SOME SLACK ALREADY. but he goes back to natural show Alec and says you know what, fuck you! my relationship has berthing to do with it because I’m not a shitty fucking person. but thank you for joining Magnus and valentine got switched and it wasn’t done properly and make jace go away already I don’t care about him and I’m sick of herondales discussion post. I’ll be starting episode 13 hopefully tomorrow!!!!!!
MAN I WENT OFF BUT BITCHFEST WILL CONTINUE TO A THEATRE NEAR YOU

Inspired by @castleoffandoms and @kinkymagnus discussion of Malec and office sex. I totally agree btw about Alec teasing Magnus to hell and back under the table :)
When Alec reached under the table, Magnus thought he was just scratching his thigh. He shot his boyfriend a soft smile and turned back to Luke, fully intending to listen to the leader of the New York’s pack.
Which was why he was so surprised when he felt a hand fall heavily onto his leg, gripping his knee.
He turned his head to look at Alec but he looked fully absorbed in what Luke was saying.
But the hand on his thigh inched higher, very slowly. Magnus blinked in surprise, shifting in his seat.
He shivered as it trailed higher, stroking along his leg almost absently.
Heat started to pool in his stomach as Alec’s hand traced circles on his inner thigh, one of his more sensitive areas. His skin prickled with goosebumps and his fingers curled.
The warlock dropped his head, twitching as all of his attention went to willing down his growing erection.
“Yes, I agree. Perhaps the werewolves can work closely with the warlocks to resolve this. What do you say, Magnus?”
Magnus jerked, eyes widening as Alec’s fingers danced over his groin. His lips parted and his fingers clenched into fists as Alec massaged him lazily.
“Magnus?” Raphael was looking at him with raised eyebrows, as if he knew exactly what Alec was doing under the table and Magnus shifted, sitting up.
“Y...yes, that would work. I would be delighted to,” he mumbled, biting back a groan as Alec popped his button.
Alec hummed in approval and turned to Raphael, gesturing for him to begin his usual report of what the vampires were up to.
Magnus tuned out of the conversation the moment Alec moved his hand, sliding the zip of his trousers down torturously slow.
He shot his boyfriend a look as he thumbed over the head of his half hard cock, regretting his decision of not wearing any underwear.
Alec smirked, the bastard, ducking his head down to hide it. Raphael continued droning on, completely unaware of what was going on.
Magnus’ breath hitched when Alec pulled back his foreskin, playing with the head lazily. His nails dug into the wood of the table and he barely managed to swallow down a gasp.
Alec scraped a nail along the underside of his cock and Magnus must have made a sound because the table went silent.
“Are you okay?” Luke asked, his brow furrowed with concern.
Magnus inhaled sharply when Alec’s thumb brushed over his balls and nodded tightly, forcing a smile into his lips.
Raphael merely raised his eyebrows, before moving on with his rant.
Alec stroked him slowly, so slowly that he barely even noticed that he moved. All of the blood in his body seemed to rush south, his cock filling up even more at the attention.
He lurched in his seat, the gasp spilling out of him when Alec squeezed him, his fingernails making a squeaking sound against the wood.
Raphael stopped and Alec withdrew his hand swiftly, wiping it on his pant leg before turning his full attention to the vampire who was scowling at Magnus.
Magnus’ cheeks flushed red and he swallowed the whine that threatened to come out as Alec left him bereft, his attention now occupied with placating Raphael.
He slid his hands under the table, carefully tucking himself back into his pants. There would be no hiding the wet spot that his leaking cock had caused and he knew he would have to stay back after the meeting.
He could not very well be walking around the Institute with a raging hard on.
Magnus took a deep breath and attempted to calm himself as Alec opened up the table for suggestions.
As Luke and Raphael listed ideas, a hand crept up his inner thigh again, the simulation going straight to his already hard cock.
Magnus shivered, pressing his lips tightly together to suppress the noises that he wanted to make.
He shot his boyfriend a pleading look when Alec stopped touching him, moving to distribute papers to the other two representatives.
“Thanks for coming, guys. We got a lot covered. See you all next Tuesday?” Alec ignored the squirming warlock beside him, smiling warmly at the rest of Cabinet.
Luke and Raphael murmured their assent and stepped out of their chairs.
For a moment, Magnus thought he would be asked to join them but Alec’s hand curled around his thigh and squeezed, far too close to his crotch for comfort.
He made a strangled sound when Alec rubbed at the bulge in his trousers that was quickly covered up by him saying, “I have some things that I have to discuss with Mr Bane, you guys go on ahead.”
The smirk on Alec’s face when they were the only two in the room was downright dirty.
Magnus arched back with a low moan when he rubbed him again, his skin covered in a sheen of sweat. He shuddered and gasped when Alec claimed his lips, his hand still moving over his cock.
“Did you like that?” Alec’s eyes gleamed as he watched Magnus pull away, panting heavily as he worked him over the fabric of his pants.
“P...please!” Magnus gasped when Alec thumbed over the head of his cock, dropping his head onto his arms. He was trembling, little pants and whines escaping his mouth.
Alec pulled away abruptly and he whined, reaching out to grab him.
“Not here. My office, in five.” It was an order, and the way Alec said it in his Head of Institute voice made Magnus’ breath stutter.
He nodded obediently, watching as Alec walked out of the room with a smirk tugging on his lips.
He was so fucked.

I'm really sorry if it's inconvenient but I was wondering if I could request for a malec one shot or something? Where malec and a few friends head out to a bar and magnus goes to get drinks while Alec stays with the others and while Magnus is at the bar some dick-was starts hitting on him and making him really uncomfortable (like touchy-touchy and trying to buy him a drink and all that horrible stuff) and magnus keeps telling him to stop but he won't. Then Alec storms over and "sorts shit out"?
I hope you like it ;)
“Ah, finally… an evening out,” said Magnus happily, holding Alec’s hand as they were making their way to the Hunter’s Moon with Izzy and Simon. The four of them decided that it had been far too long since they had gone out like this and when Izzy proposed the idea, Alec and Magnus were immediately interested in going out with them. Simon and Alec had gotten closer recently, so there was no hostility in between them, Alec and Simon chatting, while Izzy grinned and she nodded.
“It’s been so long since we went out together like this,” said Izzy and Magnus nodded in agreement, looking over at Alec, whose hold around his hand tightened just a little bit and Magnus happily beamed when he felt Alec’s thumb gently caressing the back of his palm, happily sighing when they finally made it to the bar, Simon and Izzy going inside first, followed by Magnus and Alec. Simon picked them a table at the far right corner and they sat down, happily chatting.
“I’m happy you agreed to go out with us, big brother,” suddenly said Isabelle and Alec looked over at her, shrugging. “I thought you had lots of paper work to sort out due to tomorrow,” she then commented and Alec shrugged.
“Well,” said Alec and a little sly smirk spread across his face. “I let Raj deal with that,” he then said and waggled his eyebrows, making Magnus grin next to him when he saw the naughty smirk on his boyfriend’s face. Ah, Alexander loved messing around with the idiotic Shadowhunter and he pressed his lips together. “It’ll do him good… for his character building,” he then added and Magnus started laughing, Izzy doing the same and Simon just chuckled.
“It’s pity Jace and Clary couldn’t make it,” said Simon and Alec wrinkled his nose. In his opinion, they were all lucky that the two of them couldn’t make it, but he wasn’t going to make a comment about it. However, the look on his face said it all and Magnus started cracking up, because he knew exactly what was going on in his boyfriend’s mind. He then looked towards the bar and narrowed his eyes when he saw that no one was getting to get their order.
Maia wasn’t there as it wasn’t her shift that evening and all of the other waiters seemed very busy. Well, the place was quite crowded, so Magnus couldn’t really blame them. Because the other three were chatting, Magnus decided to go get their drinks instead. “I’ll go order us drinks,” announced Magnus and Alec looked at him. “What are ya’ll having?”
“Oh, um… martini,” said Izzy and Magnus grinned.
“Ah, a true woman of class,” said Magnus and then looked over at her brother. “Alexander?”
“Beer,” said Alec and after Simon said he wasn’t in the mood for anything, Magnus was on his way. “Want me to go with you?” he asked, Magnus shaking his head as he leaned down to press a kiss on top of Alec’s lips, who wore a little shy smile on his face once Magnus pulled back as his sister and her boyfriend were watching them and he cleared his throat.
“No need to, darling,” said Magnus with a wink. “I can manage ordering drinks on my own,” he then added and after one final kiss on top of Alec’s temples, he walked over to the bar, smiling as he felt Alec’s eyes on him. Alec kept looking over to his boyfriend for little while, until he turned back to the other two and continued chatting with them.
Magnus sighed under his breath, because the bar was empty and he rolled his eyes, but sat down as he waited for one of the waiters to come back. In the meantime, as he was waiting, he noticed someone from the other side of the bar looking at him and Magnus narrowed his eyes. The guy watching him was a Shadowhunter, quite easy on the eyes indeed, but the look in his eyes… Magnus didn’t like it one bit. It was almost predatory, really rubbing Magnus the wrong way and he then just shifted his gaze away, rubbing the back of his neck and he then started tapping with his fingers against the bar, whistling as he waited for someone to finally take his order.
Much to Magnus’ horror, the guy that was sitting far away from him, stood up and walked over him, sitting onto the seat next to his and Magnus rolled his eyes. Great, now he had an annoying creep on his hands. Well, he was just going to let him know that he wasn’t interested as Magnus caught on pretty fast why the man was watching at him like that.
“Hello, sweetheart,” said the guy and Magnus could gag. Just the way he spoke to him… it was tacky. And even though his voice was dripping with fake sweetness, Magnus could see right through his bullshit. Nope, the man’s attentions were anything but innocent. There was just something that didn’t sit with Magnus right. However, he was still trying to have some faith into the guy’s sanity. Most of the people he encountered gave up soon after he told them he was already in a relationship.
“Not interested,” shut him Magnus right away and the guy started laughing.
“Oh, a feisty little thing, aren’t you?” asked the guy and scooted a bit closer to him, Magnus rolling his eyes again and he quickly moved his hand away when the guy was about to touch his hand. “Come on, drop the act… stop playing hard to get. I know you want me,” said the guy and Magnus could almost laugh. Wow. Guys like this one were pathetic, so full of themselves.
“I have a boyfriend, not interested. Sorry,” said Magnus.
“He doesn’t need to know,” said the guy and waggled his eyebrows, leaning closer. “Let me buy you a drink,” he said and Magnus gave him an unimpressed look. “And show you what real fun feels like,” he then whispered into Magnus’ ear, who felt sick down to his stomach and he quickly shoved the man away, but didn’t make too big of a scene about it. He just wanted one peaceful evening out with his friends without any drama, so this was why he decided to grit his teeth and try his best to ignore the imbecile. However, if he wouldn’t stop, Magnus was frying his ass.
“Leave me alone,” grumbled Magnus and his face brightened when someone finally came to Magnus to take his order. However, before he could speak up, the idiot interrupted him.
“Two whiskeys, please,” said the guy with a sleazy tone of voice.
“Oh my god, just please-”
“Aw, baby, why are you like this?” asked the guy and wrapped an arm around the warlock, who tensed under his touch and if looks could kill the hunter would drop dead at that exact moment when he placed his hand on top of Magnus’. Magnus looked at the guy and put on one of the fakest smiles he could muster, no longer playing nice.
“Remove the fucking hand or you won’t have it for much longer,” said Magnus.
“Oooh… dangerous,” said the guy and Magnus was just… done. “I like it.”
It was when the guy placed his hand on Magnus’ thigh that the warlock lost it. He just felt… dirty. It had been a while since he had last been disrespected like that and he was honestly appalled and taken back by the sheer disrespect that the guy was showing him. He could easily tell that the guy was looking down on him because he was a warlock. As soon as the dirty hand touched his thigh, the idiot felt a painful sting in his hand and quickly removed it.
“Mother fucker,” yelled out the guy, withdrawing his hand in pain and he gave an offended look to Magnus. “You attacked me!”
“It was self-defence,” said Magnus and then looked away.
“Listen to me, warlock,” grumbled the Shadowhunter and grabbed the collar of Magnus’ shirt. “You’ll listen to what I say. You’ll go home with me and allow me to get a taste of your sweet little ass or I’ll go to the Clave and tell them that you just attacked me out of nowhere,” hissed the guy, face red with anger. Magnus’ jaw dropped; the guy was horrible.
Awful!
Trying to blackmail him into sex with him? Using that poor excuse? Magnus was preparing to strike him back with his magic, but then someone stormed over to them, pushed the guy away from Magnus and yanked him by the collar of his shirt, pinning him against the bar .A little smirk spread across Magnus’ face when he saw Alec holding the idiot tightly by the collar of his shirt, pinning him hard against the bar.
Alec kept wondering what was taking Magnus so long to return back with the drinks and his jaw dropped when he saw a man sitting very close to his boyfriend, his arm wrapped around his shoulders. However, he lost it when he saw the guy getting more aggressive, seeing red with anger and he just stormed over to the two of them, ready to punch the guy and all of his rational way of thinking flew out of the window when he heard just what disgusting things the idiot was saying.
“What the hell is going on here?” snapped Alec, holding the guy tightly by his collar and he then looked over at Magnus, who was just sitting there in complete silence. “Magnus, you okay?” he asked.
“I’m fine,” said Magnus and shook his head. “The idiot, he-”
“I know what he did,” said Alec, his voice deadly calm and he then looked over at the idiot, who flinched when he saw the other Shadowhunter looking at him. The stranger wasn’t from New York, so he didn’t know who Magnus nor Alec were. However, he had heard of the Lightwoods and, oh boy, was he going to get it! “I’ve heard all of the bullshit that came out of his idiotic mouth,” he growled and he then pressed the idiot tighter against the bar.
“Hey! I meant no harm. I was just trying to have some fun and-”
“Meant no harm?” asked Alec. “You were trying to pressure my boyfriend into-”
“You’re dating a warlock?!” asked the hunter in disbelief and started cracking up, disgusted. “Wow, how low can you even-” he started, but he was cut off when Alec looked at him and Magnus kept being silent, because he knew that the guy was going to get it. Seeing Alec in his protective mode was… wow. When he got all like that, he was like a beast… a sexy one. At least to Magnus and he swallowed back a smirk when he saw real fear nestling into the guys eyes.
“I suggest you select your next words very carefully if you ever want to work again,” snapped Alec and the guy then scoffed, thinking that Alec was just bluffing.
“Oh yeah? And who are you that will tell me that?”
“Alec Lightwood, the Head of the New York Institute,” said Alec and then the guy went really pale, Alec grinning and he slowly released him. “And you are?” asked Alec, the guy quickly backing away. However, Alec wasn’t going to get him away that easily and before he could run away, Magnus trapped the idiot with his magic, the guy freezing in place.
Alec knew that he needed to report this incident to the Clave. If he wanted to do this now, then he must had tried to do this before. And Alec couldn’t have this repeating. “You won’t be released until you tell us your name,” said Alec and the guy started panicking, trying to struggle against the magical restrains, but he then just bowed his head down and told Alec his name, Magnus eventually letting hi free. Alec made sure he wrote the name down, but before he could say something else, the guy was already running away and Magnus started shaking his head.
“Coward,” said Magnus.
“Yeah,” said Alec and then looked at his boyfriend, cupping his face. “Are you really okay?”
“Of course,” said Magnus and winked. “You were so amazing out there,” said Magnus and waggled his eyebrows, Alec flushing a little bit and he kissed Magnus softly on top of his lips, looking over at Izzy and Simon, who were curiously looking over at them. Alec and Magnus looked over at each other and Alec took in a deep breath.
“Now,” said Alec. “Let’s get those drinks.”
“Couldn’t agree more,” said Magnus and the four of them finally got their drinks, the encounter with the idiot just a bad memory. Magnus didn’t let such an idiot ruin his fun, meanwhile Alec made sure he let the authorities know about the idiot’s creepy behaviour.

Annual Writing Self-Evaluation
*All answers should be about works published in 2017.
1. List of works published this year:
NON-SHADOWHUNTERS
Celestial Bodies (Yuri!!! on Ice, a WIP from Yurio’s POV trying to illustrate a headcanon I had about Yurio, ended up on indefinite hold because the new SH season began and ate my brain.)
SHADOWHUNTERS (TV)
Episode-based speculations, missing scenes, codas, and fix-its:
Of Laughter and Lima Beams, 2x07 missing scene attempt #1
No Half Measures, 2x08 coda
Breathing Room, 2x09 extra scene
Life Support, 2x10 missing scene/coda
Things We Think We Know, 2x07 missing scene attempt #2 and possibly the point at which I truly accepted I couldn’t smut anymore
No Stay of Execution, 2x12 what-if/coda that went to an unhappy place
One Memory, pre-2x15 what-if/speculation
In the Glow of a New Day, pre-2x18 speculation on Magnus’s greatest fear (or his unwillingness to go there) based on the sneak peek.
Midnight Oil, 2x18 coda
AUs
Alicante Hall, college AU written for the Malec Secret Santa exchange
Magic and Mass Effect, just what it says on the tin, Mass Effect 3 crossover on indefinite hold because the One Easy Answer universe ate my brain
One Easy Answer, marriage-of-convenience AU. Canon-divergent beginning at 1x12, offering a look at what season 2a might have been if Magnus hadn’t interrupted Alec’s wedding (but Alec called it off on his own) and thus the events of season 2a weren’t influenced by Alec and Magnus’s developing relationship. When they come together post 2x10/2x13 they enter into their politically motivated marriage to try to prevent war between the Downworld and the Clave.
A Separate Peace, sequel to One Easy Answer that got way more canon-divergent, focusing on giving the characters far more agency and filling a lot of plot holes. Covers the events of season 2b from the premise that Alec and Magnus have gotten married and are trying to unite the Shadow World, but pressure on multiple sides may destroy what they’re trying to build.
2. Work you are most proud of (and why): Definitely A Separate Peace. First because it’s the first actual novel I’ve written in, like, three years, and also because it’s the most tightly-plotted piece of work I’ve ever done, and that includes my professional published novels. It just came together so well and while it might not be the greatest craft-wise because I’m out of practice (so. many. dialogue. tags) it was really a truly excellent piece of storytelling, IMO.
3. Work you are least proud of (and why): Probably one or both of my 2x07 missing scene fics. I’ve been an erotic romance author in both fandom and professionally for 20 years, so the discovery that I just can’t (and don’t want to) write smut anymore is a really hard pill to swallow.
4. A favorite excerpt of your writing:
“Yeah, but he wasn’t entirely lying,” Jace said with a shrug. “Clary and I do share the same blood, in a way. And those first few weeks, it’s like we needed to be close to each other, to, I don’t know, figure out the abilities the angel blood gave us. And once we’d done the work we had to do, we didn’t need to be with each other like that anymore. So maybe that’s why we felt that pull toward each other, and we just didn’t know what other context to put it in, you know?”
“I really don’t,” Alec said, shaking his head.
“Look, I love Clary. I do. I’m gonna love her the rest of my life. I just apparently don’t want to…be with her like that.” Jace shuddered. “To be honest, after the first few weeks, it sort of started making my skin crawl. And she says she feels the same.”
“Wait. Wait.” Despite his best efforts, the first snicker slipped through Alec’s nose. He covered his mouth to try to hold back a bark of laughter, but it wouldn’t be contained. The rest followed, pouring out of him in a torrent of amusement while Jace looked on in disgust.
“What the hell? Are you drunk?”
Alec flapped a hand at him. “No! Wait wait wait!” Alec gasped, clutching at his sides as he slid down the wall, fighting for breath. “Are you—are you—telling me—”
He couldn’t even manage the words. His ass hit the hard, dirty concrete of the sidewalk and he pressed his face to his knees, shoulders jerking convulsively.
“—After all you two have been through—” He snorted and that just made him laugh harder, his head spinning with oxygen deprivation. Finally, he managed to wheeze, “—That it’s like kissing your sister?”
That set him off again, the peals of his laughter echoing off the walls of the nearby alley. If a demon came along now, he was a dead man, because he couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe, couldn’t speak. His stomach was starting to hurt and he still couldn’t stop.
Jace gave him a withering glare. “I hate you,” he muttered, and stalked away with Alec’s howling laughter chasing him.
A Separate Peace, Chapter 8
(Okay, look, I’ve ALWAYS struggled with writing comedy, so this was a major achievement for me. Also Jace/Maia is way more awesome than Clace so I was pleased to have found a way to walk Clace back and make way for different ships for Clary and Jace.)
5. Share or describe a favorite comment you received: I love all the people who leave me feedback, especially the ones who leave feedback with each and every chapter, but I really have to say, @lyannastarkweather was my MVP for A Separate Peace. Every single chapter she just left these beautiful, long, thoughtful comments and they were such a joy to read.
6. A time when writing was really, really hard: Did I mention the fact that I can’t smut anymore? So pretty much any sex scene or almost sex scene in my fics was like pulling teeth. I ended up fading to black a lot.
(Also, pretty much everything that happens from Chapter 13 to the end of A Separate Peace made me cry. A LOT.)
7. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: Maryse Lightwood. I haven’t written much from her POV, only Midnight Oil, but her development in A Separate Peace was a joy to delve into.
8. How did you grow as a writer this year: I wrote both heavily plot-driven stuff and comedy, which are two things I’ve very much struggled with. Usually my books and fics have been more about character exploration, so that was really an accomplishment for me.
9. How do you hope to grow next year: I hope to keep improving on those fronts, and also to find more of a balance between character exploration and plot movement, because I feel like I went a little too far in the plot direction in A Separate Peace.
10. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc): @roseglass was a champ for beta’ing basically a novel and a half worth of fic that I sort of volunteered her for. The conversation went something like this:
Me: I’m thinking of writing a marriage-of-convenience AU Her: I think that’s a fine idea Me: Okay, I’m doing it and it’s all your fault for encouraging me therefore you have to beta it
I’m lucky she didn’t tell me to take a flying leap, tbh. Of course, after 30 years of friendship “a flying leap” would probably involve a lot more f-words and more anatomical specificity.
@faejilly @janoda @actuallyredorchid @ladymatt @blj2007 and @lyannastarkweather  @nancyloumm @s-erendipitiness @champagnemagnus @nanf1c @ketzwrites @beatperfume @nanichick5 @247malec @sharona1x2 @rayofsunshinemaiaroberts @lecrit @irina-something @blav527 @uniqxfuera @a-rosewood-by-any-other-name @michellemisfit @rutherinahobbit @djchika @immortal-husbands @bane-of-brooklyn @accal1a @ohfreckle
were all tremendously friendly, supportive, responsive, inspirational, are people i want to get to know better, and/or are just positive people at a time when I needed positivity in my life. (forgive me if I’ve overlooked anyone; i know there are others I’ve had meaningful interractions with this year, I’m just not remembering everyone.)
11. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year: well, Mouse in One Easy Answer/A Separate Peace looks like my cat (who also looks like Alberto’s cat Stella.)
12. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers: it’s okay to step back, take some time, and come at it again later when you need to.
13. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year: I really cannot wait to delve into the sequel to A Separate Peace. There’s something gonna happen in there that’s gonna make a lot of people happy.

Scribble-Doodle: Wraiths
A parabatai/Malec/Clace story set after 220. Open-ended because I don’t know how the show plans to take on this particular issue, so...
The first time it happens, they’re walking home from the Hunter’s Moon, he and Magnus, hand in hand, just enjoying each other’s company. And that’s when…
… that’s when the world turns white, like the negative of a photograph, darkness becomes light and light becomes darkness and there’re… things floating around, like wisps of smoke, things with glowing eyes and sharp teeth and they see him, they notice him looking and they turn towards him with mouths gaping wide open and they screech…
It’s gone and Alec stumbles blindly, gasping, as his knees turn weak and a wave of exhaustion crashes over him.
“Whoops!” Magnus yelps and grabs Alec’s hand to stop him from falling over. “Hey! Hey! Are you okay?” he asks, concerned, and touches Alec’s face gently. “You’ve gone awfully pale on me.”
Alec blinks rapidly and looks around, but everything’s as it should be again: it’s a warm night in Brooklyn and he’s here, with Magnus, feeling his gentle hands on his face. The eerie image’s gone. What was that?
“Alexander?” Magnus asks softly, turning Alec’s face towards him. “You okay?”
Swallowing hard, Alec nods. “Yeah, yeah, I… yeah. I guess I better stay away from alcohol altogether next time, huh?” he tries for a lame joke.
Magnus watches him a moment longer, then he smiles and pecks him on the lips. “Who would’ve thought you were such a lightweight! Ah,” he adds with mischief dancing in his eyes, “Alexander Lightweight!”
Alec groans, but then he laughs, too, the incident already forgotten.
But it keeps happening, randomly and sometimes in the most unfortunate moments, like when he’s in a briefing with his people or during a Cabinet meeting with the Downworld representatives. For long moments, he loses track of time, then, as the world around him becomes inverted and all the real, living, breathing people disappear, replaced with wraiths ready to pounce the moment they see him looking. And Alec keeps quiet about it, even though he knows he should not, but how do you explain something like this without sounding crazy?
But then, one day, this… thing that’s been happening to him just goes on and on and on, this strange force holds him tight in this twilight world instead of letting him snap back into his own reality, and the wraiths get too close, they get to him and their rake their claws down his chest, reaching for his heart…
... and Alec screams and when he returns to his own world of light and warmth - the wound’s still there, four long slashes running down his chest and oozing dark red blood.
And that’s how Magnus finds him as he rushes into the kitchen, dressed only in his purple silk pajama bottoms, he finds Alec kneeling on the floor in a puddle of steaming hot coffee, among sharp shards that Magnus cleans away with a wave of his hand, and he gasps a shocked, “Alexander!” as he sees the blood oozing through the fingers of the hand that Alec has pressed against his chest.
“Magnus,” Alec gasps, looking up at him, “I think… I think I need help.”
“Why didn’t you tell us about this?” Izzy’s voice is angry when she barks out the question. Angry and no little hurt that her big brother didn’t trust them.
Alec’s lying on the couch, staring up at the ceiling. Magnus, who’s sitting by his side, trying to heal his injury, hasn’t said a word since the others arrived, but Alec can feel his disapproval. Yeah, his lover agrees with his sister. All he needs is for Jace to gang up on him, too!
Sighing, Alec admits quietly, “I was afraid, alright? I was afraid that I was going mad because there’s no reason why this, any of this, should be happening to me. I wasn’t in touch with any strange magic or any demons or anything like that. And if the explanation wasn’t magical, then…” He shakes his head.
“But this” --he points at his chest, at the cuts that’s been resisting any attempts at healing so far, both rune magic and Magnus’-- “no hallucination did this. But I still have no idea why this is happening!”
Jace and Clary who have been uncharacteristically quiet ever since they arrived, look at each other. It’s a very loud look, speaking volumes. Everyone in the room notices.
“What?” Izzy says.
“Look,” Clary says slowly, “there’s something we haven’t told you.”
Magnus snorts.
Jace walks up to the couch and looks down at his parabatai. There’s pain in his eyes when he takes in the deep, still sluggishly bleeding slashes on his chest. “I think I know what’s happening to you,” he says softly. “Well, not what exactly, but why.”
Alec frowns up at him. “Jace?”
Jace closes his eyes and clenches his hands into fists on the back of the couch. He seems to shrink in on himself. He opens his mouth and then closes it again.
Clary steps closer and lays her hand on his shoulder in sympathy. “He died,” she explains in a whisper. “Jace died there, at Lake Lyn. Valentine stabbed him in the heart.”
“What?” Izzy breathes out.
Magnus lets his magic peter out and looks up at Jace and Clary.
And Alec, hearing Clary’s confession, he freezes and his eyes widen because he remembers the terrible agony of their bond breaking. He didn’t just imagine it. It really happened. Jace died on him. His parabatai died on him!
He struggles to sit up - Magnus helps him with a chiding, “Hey, hey!” - and asks hoarsely, “How?”
“Raziel granted me a wish,” Clary says in a pained voice. “One wish. And so I asked him to bring Jace back.”
Finally, Jace opens his eyes and looks straight at Alec. “Bringing people back from the dead has always consequences,” he whispers. Then he takes a deep breath and admits, “Ever since then, I’ve been having these… spells.”
“What?” Clary asks, eyes wide with shock. She obviously didn’t know. Nobody did.
Jace goes on as if he didn’t hear her. “It’s just pain, pain and agony and this... weakness. Every time, it’s like dying again. It goes on and on - and then it stops. And I think that, whenever one of those spell hits me, it somehow spills over to you through our bond.”
Clary shakes his shoulder. “Why didn’t you tell me? Jace?” She reaches out to turn his head towards her. “Why didn’t you tell me that?”
His eyes soften. “You were so happy, Clary. It was all over, the war, everything. And you were so happy. I didn’t want to ruin it for you.” He looks back at Alec. “And I didn’t think it would affect anyone else, I swear.”
Alec just stares at him, at a loss for words. He can’t truly be angry at Jace for keeping this from him when Alec kept his own issues from him, so… He’s just glad that his parabatai’s back. And if this thing that’s been happening to him, is the side-effect of Jace’s resurrection, then he’ll gladly take it on, just to have Jace with him, just so he won’t lose him again.
“Magnus, do you know what’s happening here?” Izzy asks anxiously. Only she noticed the dawning expression on his face.
Frowning a little, Magnus nods slowly, looking from Jace to Alec and down at the bleeding wounds on Alec’s chest. Chanting a short incantation, he runs his hand over the wounds - and they disappear. Everyone gapes.
Staring down at his unmarked chest, Alec whispers, “Magnus?”
“Jace’s right,” Magnus says quietly and there’s something… pained in his face when he glances at Jace, then he turns to Alec, looking sad. “You should never bring the dead back. Jace died and not even a miracle granted by an angel can change that. His body remembers and it’s trying to return to its natural state - and that’s death.”
Clary shakes her head and there’re tears in her eyes. “No…”
Jace stares at Magnus. “Then how come I’m still here? Why don’t I just… just keel over and be done with it?”
Looking at Jace, then at Magnus, Alec asks, “It’s our bond, isn’t it, Magnus? That’s what’s holding him here.”
Magnus nods and his face turns even sadder. “Whenever Jace’s body starts shutting down, it begins siphoning life force or… or energy or whatever you want to call it through your bond - from you, Alexander,” he explains and takes Alec’s hand in his. “It pulls and pulls until it has enough to go on for a little while longer. But the more it pulls from you, the closer it pushes you towards death - that’s what you’ve been seeing, the realm of the dead, the wraiths and ghosts and all that resides beyond the veil where no living person has any place to be, that’s why they attacked you.”
“Then how can we stop it from happening again?” Izzy asks, her fear evident in the tremor in her voice.
Magnus shakes his head. “I don’t know. I can heal injuries caused by the dead by severing their connection to the other realm but I don’t know how to stop this from happening in the first place.”
Jace and Alec stare at each other. They just stare, their eyes full of horror and grief and pain and so much more. And only because Alec’s looking Jace straight in the eyes does he have the time to react when Jace grabs his knife turns it against himself.
Alec leaps from the couch - dropping Magnus down onto the carpet with a yelp in the process - and throws himself at Jace. They hit the floor hard and slide across its polished surface, wrestling for the knife that’s already left a shallow, bleeding cut on Jace’s throat. Neither holds back - this is no sparring session for fun - and they punch and kick and fight dirty - but one’s fighting for his death and the other for his parabatai’s life, and in the end, the latter wins.
Throwing a punch, Alec manages to catch Jace right in the mouth so hard that Jace slams his head against the hardwood floor with a loud thump which leaves him dazed for a moment and his grip on the knife loosens. Alec twists it out of his grasp and rams it hilt deep into Magnus’ floor.
Then he straddles Jace, and grabbing him by the front of his leather jacket, he lifts him up and snarls in his face, “Don’t you ever, ever do something like that again!”
When Jace just blinks at him, lips stained red with his own blood, Alec bashes him against the floor once, twice for good measure, before lifting him up again. “Do you understand? You will not just check out in some... some chivalrous attempt at protecting me. You will not die on me again. You will not do that. We will find a way to deal with this without anyone dying.” He shakes Jace hard and roars, “Is that understood?”
Jace stares at him defiantly a moment longer - but when he notices the tears in Alec’s eyes. His expression softens and he goes limp in Alec’s hands. “Understood,” he whispers, and when Alec hugs him tight, rocking him gently from side to side, he wraps his arms around him just as tightly, clinging for dear life.
“Well,” Magnus states, getting up from the carpet, and dusts off his hands. “Look at that, all my healing magic wasted on you lot!” He tries to appear nonchalant but his voice sounds a little shaken, a little afraid for his lover.
“Magnus,” Izzy says in a measured voice. “Can you think of anything, anything at all, that could help them?”
Magnus lifts a hand to rub his forehead; his fingers tremble a little. “Off the top of my head? No,” he admits truthfully. Seeing their faces fall, he adds, though, “But that doesn’t mean there is no way to help them. I’ll have to hit the books. Someone, somewhere must’ve gone through something similar. Resurrection is not a common thing, I’ll grant you that, but it’s also not unheard of.”
Izzy nods, now determined. “And we’ll check our books. The library in Alicante goes back centuries. If there’s anything to find, it’ll be there.”
Alec helps Jace stand and with a last gentle squeeze of his arm, he gives him over to Clary who rushes over, already pulling out her stele to activate Jace’s iratze and help him heal. Alec himself then turns to Magnus.
“Sorry about messing up your work,” Alec whispers as Magnus runs his fingers, sparkling blue with magic, over the small cut over his right eye.
Magnus smiles. “I’ve always known you were a handful, Alexander. Not that it stopped me from falling in love with you.”
Alec smiles back a little.
Resting his hand on Alec’s face, Magnus runs his thumb across Alec’s cheekbone lightly. “I promise you, I’ll do all I can to help you. I’m not going to lose you. I refuse to lose you.”
Nodding, Alec leans his face into Magnus’ hand and closes his eyes, letting Jace and Clary’s soft voices wash over him.
They’ll find a way. They have to. The war’s over. The villain’s dead. And they’ve earned their happy ending. They will find a way.
And at the edge of his hearing, the wraiths howl.

My lovely, your gift is up I'm only telling you this because it doesn't seem like the tagging is working (you know, to your blog). Not like I'm actually jittery and anxious for you to read it or anything, pshh Again, I hope you like it, I went for pretty much everything you said you liked 😘😘😘
Hey, you! Oh, my darling gifter. I am so glad that you stopped by my inbox. BOYYYYYY do I have some things to say to you about my gift! So full disclosure, I actually read this FUCKING AMAZING fic earlier today. My friend saw that it posted and sent it to me. We both freaked out over this word perfection. Then I had to run off and start my busy day. I have been thinking about this all day and waiting for the moment when I could be back at my computer so I could sit down and attempt to thank you for this incredible gift. Soooo, I’m home now, and I just read it a second time, and can I just say WOW!!!!!! lsdfhjkfdhjdfshdfshdfshjhdfsjhfsdjfdshjfds
I am still just absolutely stunned at how well you hit it out of the park on this! I don’t think there are enough words to tell you what this means to me, but allow me to try.
For starters, your message to me at the beginning was so damn sweet! I am so very glad you got me too, because we definitely needed to know each other. I cannot wait to find out who you are so I can keep interacting with you. You have been such a joy and so kind to me and I look forward to talking to you more. Seriously, this giftfest has been such a fantastic thing, and if it’s brought me such a lovely new friend, then there couldn’t be anything better.
Then………My eyes went back to the title of this fic and let me just tell you that I have a special weakness for 5 times + 1 time fics. I don’t think we talked about that, but I absolutely adore them. Also, my ears perked way up at the thought of jealous Alec and I was absolutely dying to know what last situation would not have him witnessing it.
This is so well written. That’s an understatement. This is the kind of writing that makes you think “fucking hell I’m never writing again!” (Not really, because writing is fun, but damn you are GOOD) I am DYING to know who you are and if you have more things I can read. Maybe I’ve even read some of them before?! Maybe I’m already a huge fan of yours. If I didn’t read so much damn Malec fanfiction I might be able to figure out who you are based on your writing style, but no such luck atm. Seriously, you HAVE to be a well loved fic author in this fandom. You just must be. If not, then you need to be asap. And I am now your number one fan, and I will be singing your praises from the rooftops and supporting all of your writing from this day forward. GAH. I cannot wait for this reveal!
I don’t want to leave too many details here, so as to not ruin the fic for others who haven’t read it yet, but I’m gonna need this to go on AO3 so that I can leave you an essay length comment detailing every single thing that I thought was amazing about it. Please. But for now, some things I’m just flipping the fuck out about:
Listen, I know we talked about some things I like, but I SWEAR YOU ARE MAGIC. You DID go for everything I said I liked (you overachiever, you!) but you also included so many things that I know we didn’t talk about that are absolutely tailor made for me. Seriously, it’s like you are one of my really good friends. HOW?! How did you do this?! For instance, that first part? It has been absolutely driving me insane that we missed what happened during that missing scene on the show. And your version? PERFECT. Absolute perfection. It couldn’t be better.
Jealous Alec is my jam, man. I didn’t even know I needed this in my life like this, but I am HERE FOR IT. Battle Malec?! Hell yes. HELLLLLLLL yes.
Mkay, I’m so sorry, but you have a dirty mind like me and I kinda just fell in love with you. Yeah. That’s a thing that happened. And anyone who uses curse words in their writing immediately gets my love and adoration. So there’s that. You are my ideal writer. Hands down.
So, how about we talk about these absolutely on point characterizations?! That is so incredibly important to me, and you absolutely crushed it. I’ve written these two at length and I swear we have the exact same perception of them as I do. WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL?! How is that possible? Yet another reason why I think you have to already be one of my favorite writers.
CLUB MAGNUS? DANCING ALEC? Are you trying to kill me?! Oh my holy Jesus. Have I mentioned how incredible you are!? Because I cannot say that enough.
Now you listen here, this just kept getting sweeter and making me more emotional, but for real I about died when Alec was assertive and strong and straight up carried his beautiful boyfriend away from someone making advances. DEAD. I am dead.
Raph?! YES. YES. YES.
CAT?! Thank you. Thank You. Thank you.
Ok, so Max and Rafe?! Dads Malec?! You have just won the key to my heart.
That +1?! Oh that +1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My heart. That was the perfect ending to this already perfect fic.
So, again…..please put this on AO3 so I can leave a ridiculous long comment listing every single thing I love about this, but I’ll leave you with one last thing, and that is that LOVEisLOVEisLOVEisLOVE and you clearly get that. You get that so well. It’s just a non issue in your writing. It’s completely normal for men and women alike to hit on Magnus and nobody even thinks twice about that. I don’t know why, but that just struck me so hard. That world is the one I want us all to live in. I’m so fucking emotional about this.
It’s brilliant. You are brilliant. A million thanks would never be enough. I’ll cherish it always and reread it often. I would so love to be friends. You are beautiful. Thank you.
